Smith & Wesson, model 29, 44 mag Classic Hunter
Hello,
I am wondering abou the value of a S&W 44 magnum model 29 Classic Hunter. This has a 8 3/8 inch barrel with a full lug under the barrel, unfluted cylinder, and what seems to be a match trigger and sights (could be wrong on that). This firearm was sold with hogue grips. This is not a 629, it is a blued model 29. I have never been able to find a price to put on it. Any information? I think it was made in 1990.
Thanks,
James

James, the Model 29 Classic, blue only, was made 1990--1994.
5, 6 1/2 or 8 3/8 inch barrel, full lug, round butt with Hogue conversion square butt grips, interchangeable front sights and white outline rear, frame is drilled and tapped for scope mounts.
I would say around 300 in 95% condition, 475 in 100%, maybe a little higher.

bama55,
You sure about the round butt grip frame? My NIB 29-5 Classic Hunter 6 1/2" (the box reads "6") has a square butt frame and the original Hogue Monogrips; the whole length of the backstrap is visible. VetteFinatic, does your gun have a square or round butt?0 -
My Blue Book shows the 29 Classic and MagnaClassic as round butt
frame.

bama55,
OK, I see where the discrepancy is. You're referring to the 29 Classic and MagnaClassic (I recall these have the laser etched markings) and they are indeed round butt; I was however unaware that they made them in blue finish. Anyway, what VetteFinatic and I are referring to is the 29 Classic Hunter which is an earlier model which was blue only, with rollmarks ("Smith & Wesson" on one side "44 Magnum" on the other), unfluted cylinder, target hammer, target trigger, full lug barrel, square butt frame and Hogue Monogrips.
VetteFinatic,
To answer your question, I'm not sure what the book value is but I would also suspect it's about what bama55 says, $300 - $475, depending on condition.0 -
Blokey, I believe you are correct. I don't know why, but my
blue book doesn't show the M-29, or 629, Classic Hunter.
