what exactly is the purpose of a ported barrel? and what effect does this have when shooting (trajecctory, fps,energy, etc..)

A ported barrel trades off some power and increases muzzle flash to help you stay on target. They really can work and work well; the power loss is not major and your accuracy can improve. I think they are more valid for target shooting. They are a poor choice for low light self defense situations.

I would not have it done on a pistol, however on my 300 Weatherby, it tames it to about 30-06 level for recoil. 0
