Ruger mini 14 vs. mini 30
Hello recently I had gone to my local range and came across a nice custom mini 14. After chatting with the owner we had swapped the rifles for few shots. He shot my ar15 and I got to test his Ruger. OH boy that thing was sweet. Now I want to get one. I know I won't get the same because this particular Ruger was sent to Odessa TX for custom work.
My question is; which one should I get Mini 14 or 30. I occasionally shoot deer and was hoping to chase some ground hogs. Now I know that the older versions did not had a scope mount but some one told me that the new ones come pre-fixed for scope rings. Am I right? Other thing; what accuracy do you expect straight from the box and how does the trigger perform? The last question is where can I get a target barrel, trigger and nice stock for minis. I have the older 44-mag carbine and love it. It is more than 25 years old and shoots like new how reliable are the mini 14?

The Mini's are very good gun's. I have 3 now.. The mini that is set up for a scope is the RANCH. The 223 or the 7.62x39 ammo is cheap, You can get Wolf for under $100.00 per 1,000 rd. As for add on's Look in any ShotGun News, or Gunlist and on GB, and you will find just about anything you want for the Mini 14 or the Mini 30. About the only problem you will have is the after market mags. Look back in this and you will see we have talked about mags before.

I am also a big fan of the Mini. I currently own two and although they are not as accurate as my AR's, they are fun shooters.
IF you are going to hunt deer, then go with the Mini-30 as I believe the .223 is not the best choice for humane hunting. JMHO (I am ducking now as there are some that will disagree)

I own both,if you ask me you cant go wrong either way.I like the Mini-14 because I like the 223.But be prepared to shell out some big bucks for descent mags.To answer your question the Mimi-14/5 Ranch Rifle comes with scope and rings.The warrior Mini-14 has to be tinkered with to put a scope on it.Butler creek nakes a good mount.

I have a mini-30 and it is an excellent shooter. If you already have a 223 then go with the 7.62 mini-30. I have added a few extras to mine at very little expense. It is also good for deer. 0 -
Defintely get the Mini-30. Your AR-15 already takes care of accurate .223 shooting. It takes some work to make a mini-14, AR-15 accurate. The Mini-30 would be better for larger game too. If you are a scope person, get the ranch model. 0 -

Your post is a few days old, but I just got back in town and thought I would add my 2 cents. I too have both the Mini 14 and 30, and agree with all that was said above. Both rifles are well made, combat accurate, and loads of fun - especially if you like the superb design of a Garand action. For hunting deer size game at close to mid-ranges, I would definately give the edge to the Mini 30 (7.76mm). It's a fast, light brush gun. As alluded to above, one thing to bear in mind is that factory Ruger mags are expensive. Also, they are the only ones that I have found to be consistentally reliable. Also, Ruger never manufactured high capacity mags for the Mini 30, only for the Mini 14. This is not a problem if you use the 30 for hunting, and the 14 with a high cap mag for any other situation that comes along. But if you try to use after-market high caps for the 30, expect feeding problems with some mags. 0 -

If you're interested in a deer rifle buy a bolt gun. If you really want a 7.62x39 buy a SKS. If you really want one, go with the Mini 30 but be prepared for those beutiful softball size groups. Don't even think of buying highcap mags for it unless you don't mind spending more $$ than the gun is worth. They all stink. I had a Mini 14-- jam-a-matic, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Get the Mini-30 (as you already have a .223 and the 7.62 ammo is even cheaper then .223), but don't expect MOA accuracy or even close to it right out of the box. The mini's action is incredibly simple and reliable, however the gas block gets banged after each shot and it tends to have a pretty large group. a 4" or 5" group at 100 yards is the out of the box accuracy you should expect from a Mini. 0
