How much should I expect to pay to have a 1908 Colt Pocket Hammerless 380 re-blued?

    Hi Charlie,
    Have you considered doing it yourself? Check out Blue Wonder at www.novumsolutions.com

    I have used this product twice, once on an old shotgun to test it and then on an old Colt Commando. Both jobs turned out beautifully, very professional looking, and it wasn't because of my skills. You can make it as dark or light as you want, and you can blend it to do a partial area.

    I can't help you on the cost of having it professionally done, though. Sorry.

    Saxon, it was made in 1923 and prior to coming into my possession very recently, it was not well cared for. There is some piting and rust, abeit very minor.

    Short, first welcome to the board. I spoke to Ken today and asked him if he thought I could handle doing it myself. He convinced me to try an old gun first and then tackle the Colt. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Had a Colt 1911 parkerized by Robar (?). They did a great job. Don't know if they do any bluing. Mine cost $200. I have done some home bluing myself, and most of it comes out really nice if you read the instructions and take your time. Good luck.

    AND TEN MINUTES LATER MY COLT 1911 TURNED COMPLETELY

    BUT IT IS NOT WORTH IT, TAKE IT TO THE PRO'S
    IT'LL RUN BETWEEN 125.00 AND 175.00
    YOU WILL BE MORE HAPPY TO SEE YOU COLT LOOKING LIKE IT JUST LEFT THE COLT FACTORY

    I PAID 150.00 AND THE FINISH IS REMARKABLE

    Classic does his own reblueing...using Blue Wonder... That stuff is great.. looks fantastic and you can make the color darker or lighter depending on how many times you use it...He gave up my hair dryer..(thank god) and got a small torch to heat the gun with... beautiful job...
    Try it.. you have nothing to lose and everything to gain...

    PLEASE DO NOT REBLUE THE OLD COLT! To do so will destroy what value it now has. If the pistol is worth, say, $300 as is, and you spend $100 to have it reblued, you will then have a $150-$200 gun.

    Just use the old Colt as is with all its evidence of honorable service. Do not destroy another original gun.

    When considering this move, why? It will not look like a new old Colt when done. It will look like a failed attempt to make it look like something it is not. Why do you want that result? Even if the gun is pitted as Dr. Pig mentions, why reblue it? The pits will not get worse if the pistol is kept well-oiled. Even if they would, it would be preferable to a reblue. If the gun is pitted, the polishing necessary to remove the pits will destroy the markings and leave an uneven surface rather than the laser-flat surfaces found on these old Colts.

    If you want a pistol that looks new, sell the old Colt and buy a pistol that looks the way you want it to look. A Model M .380 in like-new condition will probably be $800 and up. If you are just looking for a shooter, use it as is. If you want the pistol as a carry gun, you should look elsewhere because of the tiny safety and other shortcomings.

    Judge Colt, thank you for your impassioned reply. You make a lot of sense to me. The gun is not as bad as all that. (I will try to get photo's up later).

    Yes, it is a piece of history and I take very good care of all my guns. If as you say, it will not get worse with TLC, I will leave it be.

    As I may carry it, what other shortcoming are you taking about?

    I sent a 6" Python to colt for a re-blue. They charged $185 and did
    a great job. Had it back in 2 weeks.

    I do kinda agree with Judgecolt about keeping it original and I like a little more stopping power for a carry gun.
