AK experts ... Help?
Where are all the AK experts now that AK47.com is gone?
I recently picked up a MAK-90 with a thumbhole stock and would like to put a US made pistol grip and butt stock on it ... I'd like to use enough US made parts that I can use any imported mag without changing the follower and floor-plate; So the question is, does anyone know how many total US made pieces I'd need to do this and what they are?
This 10 year old Chinese MAK is so much nicer that the current crop of AK's that I haven't decided for sure that I want to do this as it is an early model still NIB ... so I'm not sure if I should shoot it or just store it for another 10 years or if it even make any difference ... the MAK-90 doesn't seem to be worth any more even though they are much nicer
Thanks in advance!

You can down load the regulations from ATF, the file is called atfcfr178.pdf this is 82 pages of regulations, page 25 contains the info on the 20 parts in question. Do note that the magazine is referred to in three parts, the magazine bodies, followers and floorplates. I have seen USA made followers and floorplates, also trigger, hammer and disconects along with buttstock, pistol grip and forearm handguards.
By my count a MAK-90 should have 17 of these features so long as a muzzle attachment hasn't been added.
The 20 parts are as follows,
1 frames, receiver castings forgings or stampings
2 barrels
3 barrel extensions
4 mounting blocks (trunions)
5 muzzles attachments
6 bolts
7 bolt carriers
8 operating rods
9 gas pistions
10 trigger housings
11 triggers
12 hammers
13 sears
14 disconnectors
15 buttstocks
16 pistol grips
17 forearms handguards
18 magazine bodies
19 followers
20 floorplates
Hope this helps

interstatepawnllc - thanks for the lik, I posted there in 2 places yesterday but nobody has responded yet ...
So if I replace the trigger, hammer, sear, disconnector, buttstock, pistol grip and forearms handguards that will put me at 10 and I can use any mag then right? Or do I need to 8 parts because the "limit" is 10?

I always thought a sear was only found on full auto guns. The regulation states that "using more that 10 of the imported parts listed". To be sure you should call the ATF firearms tec branch in D.C. at phone # 202-927-7910.

I converted my MAK 90 to pistol grip a while back. The main thing is you cannot have more than 10 of the foreign parts listed in section 922 (r) above. I replaced the handguard, buttstock, all the trigger group parts, the gas piston and the magazine followers and floorplates. That left me with only about 7-8 foreign section 922 (r) parts. I got my made in USA Walnut pistol grip stock ($95.)from
soupbowlenterprises.com I paid $40. for my USA made trigger parts.
I paid $20. for my USA made gas piston. You have to knock out a pin in the old gas piston to remove it. I paid a guy to do it. It probably costs me $175.
to convert it over but it is a very nice looking AK now. And I agree that the Chinese MAK
90's are tough and reliable firearms.0 -
I bought a conversion kit just for the MAK-90 from Mock's Stocks and Grips (MSG inc) it comes with a 4 piece stock set and all the trigger parts, cost $110 ... They also put your serial number right on the receipt with the BATF authorization so that if there is ever any question you'll have everything all on one sheet that you can keep in the stock. I'll probably replace the gas piston next time I order from someone that carries them ... I also found a seller on GB that had Chinese 30 round mags for $7.95ea for 10 or more and free freight ... I guess by the end of next week I'll be ready to do some serious target shooting ... bump style!
