Siaga that takes AK Mags.

Just an FYI, a friend of mine recently bought a Siaga 7.62x39 16" barrelled rifle. He's telling me that 30rd AK mags fit it. I've been trying to get him to the range for the last two weeks to see if it actually works. He say's they lock in, but I want to see it feed before I get too excited.
If it truely works I'll let you all know about it. These Siaga's are selling for less than SKS's. If they actually take AK mags, I'm buying one and selling my sks.

    Look at the front lip of the magazine made specifically for the Saiga and compare it to the front lip of the magazine for the AK.

    The "AK" mag. will have a "notch" at the front; this notch is filled by an "extension" in the magazine well of the standard AK--this extension works to direct the round upward into the chamber as it is stripped from the magazine.

    Without the "notch" being filled, rounds being stripped from the AK mag will "jamb" at the chamber.

    Additionally, the Saiga's magazine's rear "latch" tongue is thinner than the standard AK mag's latch tongue. While the AK mag may "grab" the Saiga's latch, it often will not be latched securely and when the rifle is fired, recoil action will shake it out.

    This is not to say that AK mags can't be made to work in the Saiga (they are effectively the "same"), it's just that they won't work without modification.

    The above info is correct. I have had some of the mags modified. It is not something you can do at the kitchen table. There is grinding and welding involved, but yes it can be done. Many dealers mistakenly tell their customers that it is a simple matter, but they themselves don't have any of the mags available. I had a lengthy discussion with a dealer about it. He insisted that I was wrong, until I showed him that I knew what I was talking about. I had sold the Saiga for many years (8-9), he started selling them earlier this year. Even so, afterwards he knew what he had been telling his customers was wrong, he still said he was going to keep telling them the same thing in order to sell the guns. Initially it was ignorance, now it was lying.

    Again it CAN be done, but it is not just a drop-in fit or even just a little grinding. You must weld-up the front of the mag as well as grind the rear locking tab.

    I knew it was probably too good to be true. We'll give it a try tomorrow at the range just in case. I told my friend to try it out before he started investing in magazines. Now I hear he has 10. I made the same mistake once with a Mini 14. Oh well, I guess he could always send it to Krebbs Custom located here in Illinois. Not sure what they would charge to convert the gun to accept AK mags but might be worth looking into.

    Just wanted to update everyone on my range session with the Siaga Saturday. I went down to the Buffaloe Rock Public range located in Ottawa Illinois. This range is the best! They have all the normal covered pistol, rifle, & shotgun positions. Plus the pit! The pit is actually a sand quarry, where they allow you thow trash in to shoot as long as it's not metal. The prefered and encouraged way of shooting the trash is by means of rapid fire. A true Blast!

    Anyways back to Siaga. As was written here, it didn't take the AK mags but it was a fun little gun to shoot! I'd say accuracy was on par with my Chinese SKS. Which is suprisingly good. After blowing through 500rds in both guns. I can say this, no jams & decent accurcy.
    I looked into the mag well conversion, runs about $500-- not worth it! Well thanks all for all your insight!

    drobs, I was just at Ottawa 2 Sundays ago. Were the wheels with the big holes in them still in the pit? Those were mine.

    The sure were. I put a couple more holes in them too. Funny thing someone put a big Blagovitch sticker on a plastic 55gal drum. I think everyone and their sister tried to knock that thing over!
