Remington Sportsman 78
Anyone know anything about these rifles? They appear to be a low end variation with just a plain jane hardwood stock. Will any aftermarket stocks fit this rifle? Anyone know when they were made?

I recenlty got a remington sportsman 78 chambered in .270 Win. I already know this was just a plain jane model 700. I just wanted to double check with the experts. I am looking at putting a new aftermarket stock on it because the wood is somewhat faded and scratched but has no cracks. So my question is: Will an aftermarket stock for model 700 fit this rifle?? Thanks for your input. 0 -

Do you mean a Remington Model 788? Best, Robert

No. Sportsman 78. Plain jane bolt action rifle. 0 -
As I understand it, the 78 was a poor man's 700. If it shoots well, not caked with rust, and her lines are attractive then $250 is a
pretty good buy for a Remington .243. I don't know of any problems that were inherent to the 78, maybe someone will drop some education on this subject.0
