Specifically, I am looking for all information regarding the Springfield SAR-8 (semi-auto). Any information appreciated.

Which one?
The Springfield with the Stamped reciever and the black thumb-hole furniture? OR
The Springfield with the milled Alluminium reciever with integral scope rail and green pistol grip funiture?
I have the 2nd one. From my conversation with SA, they only sold/produced/marketed 1500 units.
They have plenty of repair/replacment parts to honor warranty work. Both units carry the Springfield lifetime warranty.0 -

Hey Mark, have you called SA to see how many of your style they produced? I sure the numbers are similar to mine. Like I said before, they quoted me 1500 units of the alluminum reciver w/green pistol grip funtiure.
Your know those SA fals...like the SAR-48/4800. They are nice guns, but the prices are through the roof. They are Imble recievers...why are people expecting to get 2500 out of them....thats rediculous. I seen a guy with the SAR 48, with Israeli heavy barrel setup...he wanted 5k for it. For that type of money..I could get a real FN.

What price range should I expect for rifle and (2) mags? Used or NEW?

I paid 950 for my model SAR 8. Before tax and all that. Remeber SA only made 1500 of these. I am not sure on how many they made of the stamped reciever version. The Springfield name carries a premium....along with a lifetime warranty. Due to the limited #s produced and teh SA name, the SAR will increase in valve. How much sdepends on the demand and future laws. They are worth the extra money, but don't pay too much, because you can invest in a real HK. 1200 or less for a Springfield is reasonable. 800 would be a good deal for sure. 1000 is fair. IF your paying 1500 for an SA,I would rather put that 1500 toward a Real HK91/G3 in great condition.
CDNN has new and like new real HK mags at a very reasonable price. So don't worry about mags....at this point prices have gone down and the supply is good.
On the Alluminium reciver model with the pistol grip green furniture....the follower and mag bottom are US parts. This makes the gun legal. It would be technicall Illegal to use another mag that does not use 2 US parts. You can get HK mags and replace the follower and floor plates with US ones. I believe springfield has more mags for sale with the US follower and mag bottom. Or you can make you own decisions regarding the laws.
I doubt the stamped reciever thas has the thumbhole stock requires a mag with 2 US parts for legality. From my under standing you can replace the thumb hole with a psitol grip stock set that is manufactured in the US.
I am not sure which gun is better...as far as function...the Alluminium or the Stamped reciever. As a collector...the stamped reciever with both style stock set would probably be prefered. But the Alluminum with green furniture is sweet.
All in all I like my model springfield.0 -
I haven't fired mine. I was going too, but after I found out SA only putout 1500 units....that was on reason not to fire it.
The second reason I have not fired it is: The gun is so stiff. I don't want to bang the hell out of it to disassemble it. But until I can disassemble it: to clean it up and remove the excess oils and stuff....I don't want to fire it.
I heard from several people, that SA did a nice job on the SAR 8 and it is accurate.0 -
Darin, There were two Hk type rifles sold by Springfield: SAR3 and SAR8. The first rifle was a pre 89 ban and was a virtual copy of an HK-91; pistol grip, flash hidder ect...a tough and expensive find today. The SAR8 is the same rifle but built to beat the 89 ban. It has the typical thumbhole stock and the flash hidder was removed and a sort of muzzel cover was fixed in its place. Both of these rifles were made in Greece by Hellenic Arms and are a licensed copy from HK in Germany and are not reverse engineered.
I have an HK-91 and an HK SR9-TC so it is easy to compare the SAR8 with its German made cousins. The finish is a bit lighter on the Greek rifle but that is hardly of any importance. The fit of the rifle is excellent and since it was built on HK tooling EVERY part (even the ones that you should not put on a post ban rifle) will interchange between the rifles...although you should never switch bolts without checking the headpace first. The Greek rifle will accept all of my HK accessories including the .22 cal conversion unit. The rear sight is a bit different from the Geramn rifles in that it has a nice little device to adjust it for windage built right into the sight...The German's should have thought of that themselves!
All and all I'd say that you'd be well served by an SAR8. I'd buy another if I could, but out here in Kalifornia if it was not in the state by 2000, I'd have to make it a police demonstrator and could not register it as my own rifle. If I gave up my FFL I'd have to move the rifle put of state to my other home in Utah and could never bring it back here. I doubt I'll ever give up my SAR8 and since I'm in the business of selling firearms that is high praise from me.
The only other HK-91 type rifles I've seen that are a nice as the SAR rifles are the few that came in from Portugal, where they are also made under HK license. The SWC rifles made here in the USA also seem to have a good reputation. The rest of the clones are for shooters on a budget and that is fine. You just have to be prepared for a few problems to pop up with those rifles at some point- slightly mis-aligned cocking tubes, a bit of fitting here and there, parts that may need a bit of adjustment, and that sort of thing. And please guys, I'm not bad mouthing those rifles so don't come back with a post about how you just shot expert with you CETME clone! I'll take your word for the fact that you are a high master and have never even touched an M1A or Garand.
