Disguised guns

I'm not an LEO and thus apologize for crashing your post, but it seems to me that if guns are to be viewed as a neutral tool and not as evil incarnate, these things would fall into the realm of acceptable. (I'm talking ethics and morality, not law and realize that any sneaky sort of gun is illegal.)

I think that these easily concealed/disguised guns are less useful than an obvious weapon in most cases as they lack the power to intimidate and Joe Rapist might simply laugh when a petite woman points her phone at him a yells "stop or I'll shoot". (This would also render them useless for most crimes as I doubt I'd hand over my wallet to a phone brandishing thug.) To me, one of the most effective uses of a gun is that they often intimidate people into stopping whatever harmful and aggressive action they taking. Also, because of their small concealable nature, they lack the serious stopping power of larger and more recognizable guns.

Nevertheless, imagine a scenario in which someone is in serious fear of their life. Perhaps an ex-boyfriend just got out of jail and has promised to pay the battered ex who reported him a visit. The ex can't carry a gun because she would get fired if people knew she had one at her job. Thus, she gets a disguised gun as an absolute last resort to defend herself.

I would think that most of us pro-gun people buy into the school of "an armed society is a polite society" and "people are safer when criminals don't know who is armed", etc etc. If so, these concealed guns would simply support this argument. If criminals fear a potential victim because of a bulge under his jacket or beacuse she walks with her hand on something inside of her purse, imagine what they would do if they had to watch out for everyone walking with cell phones. In my opinion, if they are disguised well enough to make LEOs nervous, if they ever become readily available they should also make criminals nervous.

The biggest risk with this is that some idiot might set their pen gun or phone gun down where someone else may decide to borrow it for a quick call and accidentally shoot someone. If it looked like a gun, this would be less likely to happen. The solution is to prosecute such negligent owners with "gross negligence", "unintentional man slaughter", etc. etc. rather than outlawing the weapons.

While I respect LEOs and do not want their jobs to be more dangerous or difficult (I've worked with and known quite a few LEOs), they do voluntarily assume some risks with their profession. I don't think LEO safety should be sufficient reason to reduce the rights of innocent law abiding citizens. Once the LEO detains a suspect with probable cause, the LEO is the boss and the detainee better not do anything suspicious, hostile, etc., but if a person is walking down the street openly or secretly armed for their own protection they should be left alone under the protection of the law rather than in spite of the law.

leprecon7, i'm not crashing your post. I was a department of defense LEO. i find nothing wrong with these particular firearms. a pen gun, when setup to fire almost always looks like a gun. they must be bent to form an angle that can be held an still manipulate the trigger. as for the phone gun, as i know this is what you speak of, it would certaintly raise a flag to me if i saw 4 holes in the top, and it was pointed at me. I Always used caution when speaking to anyone, be it on a gate or elswhere. its all about being aware of your surroundings. that said, nobody is perfect. there will always be somebody better, fastet, smarter, meaner, than you. you must use your brain. the best weapon god gave us.

I understand how these items have to be manipulated in order to fire but I still do not see the need to have a gun disguised as something else unless you are a spy!!! Leave these things for James Bond.
Not only is there guns disguised but there is also knives that can be bought that are totally disguised.
Another thought -would it be alright for me to rig my car up with hidden cannons- Given this thought I do not think that there is any legitimate use or argument for these weapons even in an armed and polite society.
I knew the risks taking this job but until you take a gun or weapon of someone during a traffic stop or domestic you cannot understand why I dont want to see these things promoted.
As one post said there is always someone faster etc-why give them an edge.

    Here we go.
Most LEO's are not aware of the National Firearms Act of 1934. (NFA)

IN SOME STATES IT IS LEGAL TO OWN, pen guns, machine guns, cannon's, land mines, destructive devices, etc..

While they may not serve any reportedly constructive purpose, they maybe LEGAL in your area.

Now the best part, only 2 murders have EVER been reported, using a registered NFA weapon, both were police officers, commiting the crime.

A honest law abbiding citizen, should have the right to own anything they want, as long as they don't infringe or endanger anyone eleses life or liberty!

I am aware of the fact that in some states it is legal to own these things. In my opinion and my opinion only I dont think there s a place for these in a civilised society.
I was looking for other LEOS opinions on them not a rehash of the right for people to protect themselves argument.

Forewarned is forearmed. We know of these things and I don't believe gut signals lie. Policing is fairly simple. Keep the peace. a little old lady with a pen gun is probably not a threat. Gives her a sense of security, however displaced. A crackhead with a pen gun is watched and detained as usual. We know these things exist and watch for them. I can't see how anything changes. Remember the brewhaha over Glocks? Invisible to airport x-ray? Right! The sky is not falling.

You can't remove every potential threat without encrouching on the liberty of others. It has been successfully argued in Tennessee that
car windows that can't be seen through are a hazard to LEO's. Thus
those mirrored or tinted beyond a certain percentage are illegal.

Last time I checked if a disguised firearm was illegal by federal law, it cannot be legal in a state.
My experince with disguised weapons is that the owner (or family menber) is 80% more likely to become injuried than any target (not to mention the possibility or someone innocently picking up the thing and dischargeing it).
If a person really needs to defend themselves, and they are not smart enough to figure out how to carry a real gun, or ask how it could be done, then maybe they don't really need one.

Personally, I don't want the government deciding what I "need" or "don't need". Induce enough paranoia via the media and you can get baby formula and Tylenol taken off the market. As to your experiences with disguised weapons, please elaborate. If someone wants to own a pengun and does so legally, that's his business. If he violates the law, then the LEO can step in. Run a search for pengun on GunBroker and see what happens.

    Consider this:

Statistically, the absolutely safest place to be in terms of risk of being assaulted or killed, is inside a maximum security federal penitentiary.

Any incremental increase in liberty over that brings a corresponding increase in risk.

Let's consider the problem with a legal carry. If thing get ugly, I can't retrive my piece in IN unless my life is in danger. If I show in public, I'm in trouble. It becomes a matter of timing and I'm way too old to get into a fast draw situation. If I had a cell gun or even a pen gun, I could have it in my hand just in case. If things chilled, it would be a non-event. Nobody would even look at me.

Sure, we can ban all these disguised firearms. Historicaly look what happened from everything from beer to full autos since the 20's. I don't want to sound trite here, but the folks that broke the law still had full access. Sure, the price went up, but when you rob and steal for a living, what does price matter?

    Just my $.02

Bring this over to General Discussion and we ,can talk a bit. Not really a topic for "Ask The Experts"
