Remington 742 cleaning

I just acquired a Remington 742 semi-auto in .30-06. I hear these guns may be prone to start jamming due to fouling after only 10-15 rounds or so. What is the best method to deal with this, or even prevent it? Can this be remedied in the field, or is table-cleaning with nitro solvent necessary each time? Thanks in advance.

P.S. How do you take the forend off this model to clean the gas port? Thx again.
