Ruger m-77 varmint/target..good or bad?

i have a chance to aquire a brand new unfired ruger m77 varmint target rifle from a friend for a very modest price. however, i have read so many mixed reviews i dont know what to think of this rifle. some speak wonders of the rifle, others seem question their suitability as a club. my question is would this be a good buy? are they accurate and equivelent to the other big names (remington and winchester)?? thanks!

  For what it's worth, I liked my first one(243) so much when I found another one used(22-250) at a good price I bought.

  I am firm believer in the quality of ruger rifles. I have m77 mk2 that will hold a 3/4 inch group all day if I don't get it too hot. Only change I made to it was a timney trigger. Every one on here seems to love the rem 700 although I don't see much advantage in one other than the availability of parts due to their numbers. Winchester rifles quality seems to vary depending on when they were made.

  I really like Ruger guns also but I did have a m77 varmint in 22-250 that we never could get to shoot worth a darn,, if I where you i would buy it , shoot it , if it doesn't shoot good, then sell it and get some thing else

  Just bought a new M77 in 243 and it shoots great out of the box. Rugers are built like tanks, I own several. Never had a problem with any of them. Try to shoot one first and see what you think.

  I ahve one in 222-50 that will put ten through the same hole at 100 yards.Of course I shoot hand loads, but this gun is something special.I own lots of different brands but this is my favirite.My second choice is the howa 1500 varmint in 223.This is the satinless model with Laminate blue stock and bull barrel.

  I have a Model 77 22-250 that shoots remarkebly well.I dont think you will be sorry if you get the gun.

  thanks guys, i went ahead and got it and even got to shoot it this afternoon. all i can say is you were right. i only had one 243 load to use, and even with the rough winds i got less than MOA groups. (the trigger is a bit heavy though) thanks again for the advice!!
