Smith&Wesson Pistols

Hi,
I am looking for a 9mm pistol and have been looking at CZ and Sig.
However, there is a Smith&Wesson sale in my local store this week and they have attractive deals on the pistols. My question is that I don't recall anyone recomending a Smith&Wesson pistol. I was looking at the SW99, does any one know if this is a good pistol or should I stick with their revolvers?

    You can find critics for every make of gun. If the sale offers good prices, and especially, good warrenty service, the SW99 would be a good buy. A Sig is a great gun but you'll generally pay more for it. The CZ is well made. You'll just have to see what "feels" best, who offers the best deal, and rest assured that they are all good guns.

    Pass on the tradition, teach a kid to shoot.

    I love S&W Revolvers, but I've never been a fan of their auto's. However if you'll look in shotgun news there's several distributors selling police surplus sw's for very cheap. Personally I from the one's u listed I'd take the sig first, the CZ second, and wouldn't bother with a SW unless you were low on cash.

    Also look into:

    Glock
    Springfield Armory XD Series
    HK USP

    If it's just for home defense, it doesn't matter much, but if you want something you can really enjoy shooting as well get a SIG

    greetings, the 99 is the walther-smith and suposed to be good. i have had several of their 9's, and they're ok (the triggers are ruff). i still have two 645's ,the only smith i think is worth the money outside the revolvers. the cz is an excellent weapon and won't break the bank, it has the innovative in frame slide that is inherintly accurate. the sig's are the german answer to a question that nobody asked, they're good guns but twice what they should cost, you can buy two p94's for the price of one sig226 or 228. if it were me i would check out the rugers. respt submitted dads-freehold

    Dads freehold said it well.Check out the Rugers.I have a P-95 Ruger 9mm and it is every bit as good as my Glocks but cost half as much.CW

    I've always considered Smith & Wesson a revolver company. Even with their problems in the recent past they manufacture first class cylinder handguns. When it come to semi-automatic pistols I go with Beretta, Sig, Walther, Mauser, Colt, Kimber, Glock, Randall and sometimes even a Springfield.

    Thanks everyone for taking time to reply and the good advice. I have a Smith revolver which is really nice but I think I will do more research on the right pistol for me. I will certainly look at the Rugers!

    Some still malign Smith & Wesson automatics based on poor Bangor Punta quality in the early days that resulted in some bad guns. I have a first-year M59 (1971) and it has been totally reliable with a fairly high round count. There are millions of Smith autos giving totally reliable service, but all you hear about are the few that don't.

    I like the features of Smith autos, such as active safeties, magazine safety, etc.. (These features are important to me in a house gun, and the magazine safety can be easily removed if desired.) High capacity magazines are readily available at inexpensive prices, a major plus.

    The SW99 is not a traditional Smith auto design (it is a Walther design as mentioned), and has reportedly had some major problems in New Jersey where it was adopted as the service pistol. However, I like the feel of the pistol and its features, but it does not have an active safety. I would guess the Smith "deals" are on Sigmas, which are Smith's Glock. I like the Sigmas, but again they are often maligned due to early pistols being variable in quality. The Sigma has about the best grip feel going in my opinion, and current pistols are very high in quality.

    I like the CZ75/85, but I think the looks have been ruined by the hooked trigger guard now found on new pistols. Magazines are inexpensive.

    You are right, there are some good offers on the Sigmas. I plan to stop in the store tomorrow and spend some time getting "the feel" of the pistols.

    I was able to fire the SW99 at my local gun shop's manufacturer shoot. I tell you I was really impressed! I've shot other smith semi-auto's talk about trigger bite! Yuck. I found the SW99 to have a really nice trigger pull and suprizingly it shot very accurately. Infact I put them all in the black at 21ft. I'm gonna buy one of em.
