New gun purchaser requests opinion on Handgun
Looking at getting my first handgun or gun for that matter. Need to stay under $450 if possible. Any thoughts on the Ruger P95 vs. the CZ 75 vs. the Springfield XD vs. the Taurus PT 92. After shooting several makes of the .45 caliber and a Glock .40 I have decided to sitck with the 9mm. I will welcome input on thoughts that one must spend more than $450 to get any quality.

I have a Taurus 92 and two 99 models, and have always liked them. I have a 99 that I bought used that I use in IDPA competiton. I have put about 10,000 rounds thru it. The only problem I ever had was the rear sight broke in half. I sent it to Taurus in Florida and I got it back in a week with a new sight. I like the life time warranty. I like the fact that I can carry it cocked and locked like my 1911s. 0 -

You didn't mention it, but in the $450 range, I would reccomend you look at the Glock 17 or 19 ... if you want a compact there is the 26 ... all good guns, the 19 & 26 can use the longer mags of the 17, and full capacity mags are avaiable all over the place.

If you have definitely decided on a 9mm, my vote would be for a CZ 75, granted it's not a Browning Hi-Power, but not a bad substitute.

You asked about whether it's necessary to spend more. I'll state a qualified no. The reason you would spend more is to get a gun you will probably shoot more and enjoy more over the long run.
What you might do is to shop around with a knowledgeable friend or go to a dealer you can trust and see what clean used guns they might have. You might spend a bit more, but you are likely to find that for about a hundred more you can get a Beretta 92 or Sig Sauer P226--really great guns.
FWIW, find a gun a that is comfortable to hold for you and sights that you can easily see. Some of these guns are too big if you have small hands. If you like the gun, but don't like the grips, there are aftermarket grips that might make a real difference. And get at least a couple of extra magazines.

Go with the CZ. I have 2 Probably the only handgun purchases that I have never regretted. They are as good or BETTER than the sig or berreta and equal to the glock in reliability, quality and function. They are not the best carry gun because of their weight~2lbs. But they are more shootable than the glock because of the weight. I have never had a gun problem with my CZ's. Make sure if you do buy one use only factory or MECGAR magazines. Others cause problems. Field stripping is possible in less than 2 seconds because of their inovative design. i believe that they are the second most copied pistol ever.-Flattering

The Ruger is built like a tank, virtually indestructible. The CZ is extremely well made and reliable. The XD did not impress me when it was 150 cheaper and called the HS2000. Taurus is like making love to a fat woman, nothing wrong with it you just don't want to brag on it.
Try this. Go to a shop that has the models in stock. Ensure the gun is empty. Pick a safe arbitrary aiming point. Close your eyes raise the gun and point at the aiming point. Which one pointed naturally without having to reaquire the sights?

I have a friend that is quite pleased with his CZ. I have one of thier 22 rifles and it has been reliable.
Consider the used gun market. If you shop around enough you can get some real bargains. If you are mechanichly inclined there are even more bargains out there. I have a 1911 Colt(not an A-1) Commercial not military (no U.S. Property marks)Four digit serial#. I bought it in a cigar box. Springs were all shot, barrel and bushing were missing, About 75% finish. I put a spring kit in it. A friend in the Army scrounged me up an old barrel and bushing. I've put thousands of rounds through it. Last year it started to develop stress cracks around the firing pin hole. Another friend found me an old slide. We mounted target sights on that slide. I still shoot it regularly. Total investment to date. Under $300.00.
Shop around decide what you want then learn everything there is to know about it. Good, Bad, Everything. Then buy.
