Mak-90
I have a pre-ban mak-90 and was wondering if I can put a folding stock on it now that the ban has expired? Also, I heard that CDNN has hi-cap mags, what is CDNN?

if your mak-90 is a pre-ban model, then you have nothing to worry about as it is legal to have a threaded barrel on a pre-ban gun, or bayonet lug for that matter. however, if it is a post-ban gun, then to make the gun legal the bayonet lug must be removed/disabled, and one of 2 things done to the barrel: 1. permanently attached the thread cap you mentioned by welding it or 2. permanently attached a muzzle break or other legal muzzle device to the gun by welding as it is illegal for a post ban mak-90 to have a threaded barrel. hope this helps0 -
All true in theory, but if memory serves me correctly the MAK-90s are all post-ban, made as the next generation after the ban to conform with the new laws; hence the thumbhole stock, lack of a bayonet lug, etc. There have been so many hobbiests and basement gunsmiths monkeying around with these guns that exactly what you've got may be hard to say. If the receiver is stamped "MAK 90" it is post-ban and you are allowed to retain only two of the evil features of the "Semi-auto assault weapon": folding stock, pistol grip stock, high capacity magazine, muzzle break, bayonet lug. You should probably take cwinn's advice and permanently affix the muzzle break; also finish removing the bayonet lug. 0 -
MAK-90 by definition means "modified AK 1990", so it can't be a pre-ban if it's a MAK-90.
Some of the MAK-90s had a muzzle thread protector tack welded to the barrel, thus, converting them to firearms which didn't have the threaded barrel. HOWEVER, considering this was often just a slight tack weld, some clever individuals took a file and carefully removed enough of the weld to allow the thread protector to be removed. Illegal, of course, but they did it. I'd inspect the muzzle for any indications it has had the bit of weld removed. If it's a MAK-90, it probably has.
BTW, it only takes two evil features to throw a gun on the assault weapons class, it can't have two, only one. If it was legal to have two evil features, a Mini-14 with a folding stock and pistol grip would not be considered assault weapons. However, they are.
Bet you can't think of a current production gun (that's semi-auto and takes detatchable mags) available to the public with two of the nasty five features. They are limited to one. An example, the M1A has had the bayonet lug removed in order to retain the flash supressor.

Compensators are not flash hiders. They are muzzle brakes. They may look like flash hiders, but on those in particular, the AFT has approved them for use as muzzle brakes. They don't suppress enough flash to be considered flash hiders.
If you would like an authoritative call on this, I direct you to the NRA web site that will confirm what the definition of assault rifle is. It can only have one of the evil five features. Two will make it an assault weapon. The NRA web site is:

a semi-automatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following: a folding or telescoping stock; a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon; a bayonet mount; a flash suppressor or threaded barrel; and a grenade launcher;

Compensators and muzzle brakes are not one of the evil featurs that make up an assault rifle (But currently need ATF approval) It is flash hiders, not muzzle brakes, that are part of the five evil features.
