7.7 Jap/.30-06 ammo??
I have been thinking of dusting off my old Arisaka to do a bit of shooting and find I don't have much ammo for it. I formed and trimmed some .30-06 cases, but ran across a post before I loaded any saying not to shoot these cases. I have heard of people making and shooting this brass with no problems. Anyone with practical experience in this matter? Thanks for all input. Emery

I've done them also. If the chamber is over sized they will bulge at the base, and I don't feel safe using them for more than 2 reloads (three trips thru the rifle). But as easy as they are to make, and as cheap as 1x fired -06 brass is, getting only a couple of reloads out of a case dosn't bother me.
Edit: The rifle I load them is a late war model 99, and it has a severly oversized chamber. The brass fired in it (including factory Norma 7.7x58) shows a visually obvious bulge, this is the rifle that I limit the brass to 2 reloads in. If your chamber is in spec., and not showing a large bulge, than your results will differ
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

The refom from 30/06 to 7.7 J is one of the easiest and best conversions. Anything you have ever heard (not withstanding previous comment) about it being unsatisfactory or dangerous is absolute garbage and nonsense .
Nominally, the 7.7 is about.003 larger than the 30/06, but that is considering the UNFIRED 30/06 case. By the time it has been fired, unless in an undersized chamber, the base will be within .001 to .002 and just about perfect!
Twenty years ago I made up 200 cases like that from USGI brass (I do recommend GI rather than commercial. The GI is thicker and softer)and I have no idea how many times they have been reloaded. I just use them over and over. True, I do not attempt to "magnumize" my loads, but they are not popgun loads either, actually minimally hotter than most loading tables which are overly conservative.
The 7.7 is extremely strong, the safety is the best gas deflector of any military rifle, and that little hole on top of the bbl will allow any excess pressure to be disapated.
Use your converted cases in full knowledge that they will cause no difficulty.

looking at the cartridge conversion guide, it seems that making 7.7 jap from .30-06 cases is relativley easy. i agree that GI brass is better. we stock a few boxes of norma 7.7 jap, and have a supplier who carries formed 7.7 brass. its cheaper to do it yourself. if anybody wants some, let me know at waltsgun@aol.com and tell them big mike sent you.
