'smithing questions/ drill tap

hello all

am looking into purchasing an 1100 410. was wondering if the recvr is strong enough to be drilled and tapped to accomodate an aimpoint or scope bases.

also i currently have a mossberg 500 410 and am considering having the same type of work done, but someone once warned that my reciever was aluminum and that it couldnt be drilled and tapped...truth to this?

is the recvr on the 1100 aluminum as well?

  YOU CAN DRILL AND TAP BOTH (USE 8x40 SCREWS) THE .410 DOSEN'T HAVE ENOUGHT RECOIL TO WORRY ABOUT (I WOULDN'T D/T A MOSSBERG 12 GA, FOR THIS)

  Thin aluminum receivers can strip easily when drilled and tapped.
  If you haven't done it before, practice on scrap metal before you try the real thing.

  The 1100 receiver is steel, no problem. On the alum alloy rec. of the mossberg, use plain old kerosene to lubricate the tap.

  thanks, was just talkingto a machinist who could punch the holes for me...on these recvrs do i punch the hole thru or just sink it deep enough to screw the base to the recvr?

  GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH, YOU NEED AS MUCH THREAD AS YOU CAN GET, THEN FILE THE SREWS SO THEY ARE JUST FLUSH WITH THE INSIDE OF THE RECEIVER, USE BLUE LOCK-TITE.

  Can't you buy on of the saddle type scope mounts to fit the 1100? I picked one of these for my 1187 on ebay for $13, and it works great.

  i have one of those on my 500. its the one built by tasco that bolts to the left hand side of the gun.....it works fine, i just prefer to have my recvr drilled and weaver 1 pc base mounted. i am going to mount a 30mm red dot scope on theses guns to take pigs here in hawaii.
  
  next i will be getting some 3 inch 410 slugs to test her out. i had some 3 inchers for my 500 a while back, i can get about 1 inch groups at 40 yards. thats decent enough to make head shots on the 50-75 pound pigs ill be hunting here...

  You should remove the barrel and examine the fore part of the receiver,the metal where the barrel fits in the receiver is really thin, may not get enough threads to hold, My gunsmith used a T/C contender base which has the holes spaced tightly at the rear so that all the holes were in the thick portion of the receiver.
