Remington 788 stock question

A friend of mine cut the stock on his 6mm remington 788 for his 10 yr. old son. He would like to buy a replacement stock to repair it. He bought a fiberglass stock and it didnt fit correctly. Is there a long and short stock to the remington 788? How do you tell the difference? Thanks Steve.

  There are two kinds of stocks, short action and long action. The one he needs is a short action. Short action is usually defined for calibers such as 223, 308, 6mm, 243, etc. Long action would be for calibers in 270, 30-06, etc.

  RBALI HAS IT WRONG, YOU NEED THE LONG ACTION STOCK (6 M/M, 308, .30/30) SHORT ACTIONS WERE .222, .223, .44MAG.

  I think I'm only partially wrong. I went with the thought of 6mm being almost the same as the 243, the 6mm is actually a hair longer than 243 and won't fit in the mag. I'm still pretty sure 308 & 243 are short action calibers.

  As far as wood stocks go there are four versions for the 788 listed in Gun Parts catalog #23. There are three lengths, one for the 44 Magnum only, another for 22-250, 30-30, 223 & 222 and a third for 308, 243, 6mm and 7mm-08. The fourth variety comes into play when considering inletted or non-inletted magazine plates.
