Shall we talk about ballistics?

The Mark II I bought has:
Groves/Twist 6 RH
Turns 1 in 16"

I understand there are groves in the barrel to (I assume) make the ammunition come out spinning. Does it improve speed or distance or something?

  The grooves are refered to as rifleing they make the bullet spin like a well thrown football. Without them your accuracy would be deplorable. Like shootin a roundball out of a shotgun. Best hope of hitting something consistantly would be 25-50 yards. I have a smooth bore 22 for shooting shotshells and accuracy is measured in feet instead of yards. It is all about accuracy...

  During the Revolution the British had guns with smooth bores. Fifty yards was about the max distance they could consistently aim at and hit a particular man. Many rebels possessed the cutting edge weapons, guns with grooves, or rifling, cut into the barrel. With these rifles a good rebel could hit at 200 yards, maybe more. It doesn't increase the speed or distance of the bullet. Nowadays even the British Army uses rifles, about the only smooth bores made today are shotguns.

  Awhile back, when I still did Civil War reenacting, we busted out our weapons on a guy's private range. The other members are exactly correct- the rifles seems to do rather well, while the smooth bore guns did rather poorly. So poorly, in fact, that the bullet would sometimes be visible as it tumbled through the air. The only benefit of this was the creepy sound it made- kind of a whistling hum.
  Back during the Civil War, soldiers with smooth bore guns were told they were effective up to 100 yards.

  Imparting spin to a bullet gives it both stability and accuracy.
  
  Allen...."Nowadays even the British Army uses rifles". Yeah, but do they make cars that don't leak oil?
