Springfield 1903 Stock Complete or Sporterize

HI - I picked up a swell 03 but the stock is cut off at the barrel band and the top wood is missing - should I put it back to military and if so where is a place to find the wood or what all is required to Sporterize it if there are some late 50s or 60s people that still work on these old babies, I'm open to directions either way. I can't spend a tubful of money on this project but it shoots so sweet I'd like to do it justice - THANKS- The Sandman

  As long as the barrel and receiver are unaltered, returning it to military configuration should be a relatively economical & worthwhile project. (Holes drilled in the receiver automatically drop the value to a $100 deer gun.) Any old wood would be fine if it has been refinished or the parts are mixed; if all original, it may be worthwhile trying to find an original cartouched stock.
  
  Most local gunsmiths should be able to do this project for you. Or, you could contact Orion 7 or Dean's Gun Restoration. You can get other suggestions from posters on the 1903 forum at www.jouster.com.
  
  Sporterizing it would be a waste of money. 50 years ago, when you could get an 03 for $15 & labor was cheap, it made sense; today, it doesn't.
