AK-47/MAK-90 What's different
I have what is supposed to be a Mak-90. The semi-auto rifle has SA2000M, Made in Hungary, 7.62x39mm. It's an assault rifle set-up. I have 10 rd clips that fit in it with no problem. The problem is, I've ordered 75 rd. drums and clips that state AK-47/Mak-90 and yet won't fit. What gives? If some one could tell me what is going on, I'd appreciate it. I was told that this was a MAK-90 conversion. ?.

guy..some ak clones are designed to function with double stack( high capacity) mags..others are made for single stack mags ( 10 round maximum)..i have a chinese MAK-90 that takes high cap mags,,if your 10 round mags are only 1\2 " wide or so, high cap mags wont work. i hope this helps 0 -
MAK-90 means "modified AK 1990" which is what the chinese imported after the 1989 ban on AK style firearms. Later, importers from European contries, in order to comply with the current import laws, modified their firearms to accept only 10 round magazines. Those are the lowest priced AK style firearms on the market. They can be modified to accept higher capacity magazines, such as the drum, relatively easily, however, in order to do this modification legally you would need to add several parts made in the USA. That might cost as much as selling the gun you have and buying a "real" MAK-90, or for that matter, one of the guns they are currently offering that have all the necessary parts to already make it compliant with US laws.
These firearms laws really suck.....

To make matters worse I suspect that modifying a Mak-90 to an Ak-47 may be illeagal. As I recall the only reason for the Mak-90 was to get around the prohibition of the AK-47 & you can't legally replace the stock with the AK type stock & grip. I'm not positive so someone quickly correct me if I'm wrong. 0 -
To confuse things a little more.I sold Mak-90s in the past (about 6 yrs ago) that came with a thirty round double stack mag ?

It's like driving around town in a Porsche in first gear. Get rid of it and buy a hi-cap rifle. OR sell me that drum, cheap, in a fit of frustration.

Modifiaction of the SA2000 is not practical. The gun was designed to only accept the 10rd mag made for it specifically. The Romanian guns were made such that the importer could modify them to accept high cap mags with some machining. The FEG was done differently from the Romanian. I have not seen any successful conversions like that. If high capacity capability is a requirement, you have purchased the wrong gun. The standard thumbhole stocked FEG's were stopped in 1997. The real pre-ban ones only came in in 1985-1986. They had the pistol grip and bayonet lug. The thumbhole ones started in the early 1990's. The one you have came in a few years ago , but was not well received since it wouldn't take a high cap mag and even the 10rd for it were pricey. The 10rd mags from Eygpt and Romania will only fit their countries guns. The high cap guns were all set up to take the same mags. The 10rd ones were done independently of one another and hence have no interchangeability. 0 -
The AK-47 is an assault rifle. It is capable of fully automatic firing, i.e., a machine gun.
The MAK-90 is a semi-automatic rifle. It looks like an assault rifle, but it is NOT an assault rifle. Each shot requires a separate pull on the trigger. The gun-control extremists, with the willing cooperation of the news media, have intentionally perverted the term so that many folks don't appreciate the difference.
Your rifle is one of the most recent versions and will not accept hi-cap magazines without modifications that cost more than the gun is worth, both to the magazine well and in the addition of enough US made parts to take it out of the definition of an illegal rifle under sec. 922(r).
You are better off selling it and buying an older rifle built to accept hi-cap double stack mags as already suggested above.

the mak-90 is a semi-auto, high-cap AK anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. The SA200m is a semi lowcap AK frame made to comply with the brady ban. it's built in Hungary imported by KBI and sometimes called a "FEG" it's a great rifle, i have one, superbly accurate and fun. if you wan to convert it to shoot high caps then you have to file off a set of tabs on the edge the slot where the insert the magazine. All the other hookups are the same. now i have to go 0 -

Hey Whitedemon, after a post goes three years without anyone responding to it, you might want to consider the topic closed. Last post prior to yours was October, 2002, and now you dredge it back up three years later? Federal assault weapons laws have changed since then. And the purpose of you dredging it up is to call someone an idiot? I'm not even sure who you are calling an idiot. Now, if you want to talk about a statement that doesn't make sense, it is calling any AK styled rifle of any variety "superbly accurate". Even the Dragunov's chambered in 7.62X54 Russian, from places like Romania, Russia, and China don't come close to US standards of accuracy. Terms like "superbly accurate" should be confined to describing precision bolt rifles, or perhaps with gas guns, worked up M14 and AR15 styled rifles, or the Stoners. On the outside edge, maybe a highly worked FAL or HK might be stretched to use the term, but it starts getting really questionable at that point.
