colt scope
I just acquired an old Colt riflescope, and I'm hoping someone here can help me with an approximate age and value. It has a 1" matte finished tube, the bells are gloss fininhed. It is marked
"Coltmaster 4X", and has an intergral, inverted dovetail mount rail. It is in exellent condition. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

I'm not sure what you have. I've saw 4x20 Colt scopes for the AR-15's. The adjustments are not in the middle of the tube, they are on one end. I wouldn't consider them old. Does the dovetail mount look like it is made for a rimfire or centerfire? What power {4x?}. Is it for sale? 0 -
I'm familiar with the AR-15 scopes and this is not one. It came from the estate of a gunsmith who passed away several years ago after being active in the trade since the mid-50's. I have been messing with this stuff for 30 years and I have never seen this style of mount. The mounting rail is a 3/8" male(?) dovetail that is attached to the bottom of the full length of the tube. I got a set of mounts with it, but it's anyone's guess as to what they fit. The mounts attach to a standard drilled and tapped receiver, but they have clamps which attach to the bottom of the scope. It is a 4 power with what appears to be standard crosshairs. 0 -
During Colt's flirtation with being a "full line" sporting firearms provider, it offered scopes with the Colt name on them. It sounds like you have a standard centerfire scope sold along side the Mauser-actioned Colt "57" rifles sold in the 1950s. They have a special mount adapted for the Colt 57.
The rimfire "Coltmaster Junior" uses a standard dovetail rimfire mount, and was sold along side the various rimfire rifles Colt marketed during the 1950s and 1960s.

Colt 4x made from 1959-1973. Value is in the $25-$45 range depending upon condition. The colt scopes utilized and integral dovetail rail for mounting, which was included with the scope.
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.
