That is a very low weight for blue dot in a 44 mag. My manuals give a starting load of 17.8 gr. I would guess velocity would be around 1100 fps. If you are wanting a light load, I would use something like Unique. I would be afraid that that light a load of Blue Dot would be very erratic. Blue Dot is very temperature sensitive, especialy to cold weather.

I have an older Hornady manual and it shows 16.6 gr with a 200 gr bullet. It does not list a 180gr bullet. Lyman no 47 is the one that I got the 17.8 gr starting load.

When you model this through a ballistics program, the following information is derived.

16 grains of Blue dot w/ 180 gr. JHP and a 7.5" barrel.

    1300 FPS. (rounded off)
17,200 PSI. (top pressure is 36,000 PSI)
80.2% of powder burned. (20% of powder wasted)

** This is with a 180 gr. Sierra JHC confirmed with my Sierra reloading manual **

    Regards.

Alliant's web site lists 19 gr for 180 gr bullets at a velocity of 1725 with a 5.7 inch barrel.
