Springfield or Colt

I am about to buy my first 1911. I have narrowed it down to the Mil spec Springfield (about $460.00) and a series 80 NIB Colt, Blue steel, diamond checkecked grips (really nice) ($660.00). BOth of these are the government 5inch. Any thoughts on either? BTW, I'm not yet about to get a Kimber, although I know that a lot of people will say that there is no other choice. The Colt is as much as I'll spend.

  If the extra $200 was not a problam I would get the Colt.Better resale value and looks a notch above the Springfield.The ones I have shoot about the same.If I wre to get another I would go Stainless.CW

  If I were you I would consider the Springfield.You can buy the Loaded Package that is customized right out of the box.I like mine it shoots good and handles good in the hand.

  I would buy the Springfield as I hate the 80 series safety system. I have found that it is very hard to buy factory replacement parts for the new Colt 1911. I haven't tried in a while. I have looked at the current model Colts and they do look better now that the management has changed. For years the Colt barrels were fitted to only shoot hard ball ammo. I have 5 70 series and 2 80 series Colt 1911 pistols, and I have had to adjust and polish every one before they would work reliably. I have had better luck with the Springfield 1911. Kimbers are the best in the $600 price range out of the box. If you have plans to do any work on your guns, I would go with the Springfield.

  All of my 1911's are Colts....and a Colt will probably hold it's value better.
  
  That having been said, I've seen and shot a bunch of Springfields, and for my money, in fit and finish they're as good as the (post Series 70) Colts.
  
  You won't go wrong with either.
