Kimber Ultra Carry .45
i looked at a Kimber Ultra Carry today in 45. Anybody got any experience with them? It felt good and seemed to have what I was looking for in a carry weapon. Just am in the dark when it comes to this class of firearms. Your ideas are appreciated! GHD

I have a Pro-Carry CDP, its been great, the slide felt a bit gritty when I first got it but it finally smoothed out, has always been reliable and accurate. Kimber reccomends you replace the recoil springs every 800-1000 rounds, I've got a couple thousand on mine (its about 18 months old) and haven't seen a need to replace them yet.

I can't knock the Kimber line at all but have you tried the Colt Defender? Virtually the same size slightly lighter and it is a Colt.

I have a stainless Ultra Carry. Lightweight frame, steel slide, dovetail sights, smooth rear sight and very accurate for it's intended use. I like mine and prefer it to the colt defender. Before the flames start, I like my Colt Commander(s) better than the Kimber Pro series.
A couple of things to think about on the kimber... You need a Kimber takedown tool (paperclip) to dissasemble it; it goes in the guidrod to keep tension on the spring. Overall size is almost the same size as a j frame 38 point to point. Recoil can be stiff on a lightweight small 45.
I paid $600 used for mine.

I have a CDP Pro and I solved the recoil spring problem by installing a 20# ISMI flat spring that is made for the Glocks. I got tired of shelling out $8 every 1000 or so rounds for Wolfe springs. ISMI offers a kit for the Officer length guns, but you have to get a smaller diameter full length guide rod and plug made for the longer slides. I have even been doing this is my 5" 1911 guns. The standard full length springs work as is in the 5" guns. I counted the coils in the Kimber factory recoil spring and got 14 1/2. The ISMI flat spring in my CDP Pro has 26 coils. It is no wonder that the factory springs don't last long. The ISMI full size spring is suppose to last 50,000 rounds. I have not worn one out yet, so I don't know for sure. I like knowing that the recoil spring is not going to fail when it might be real problem. 0 -
I have to agree with punchie. The Colt Defender would be my choice also. I have owned one for a couple of years now. Accurate and reliable with all types of ammo. I still believe it is still the Lightest .45 out there (unless some new model has come out lately I haven't heard about.) and you don't have to change springs every 800 rds. 0 -
Kimber makes a great weapon. You must carry it "cocked and locked", however. Not a problem if you are comfortable (and educated) with this type of carry.
If you want an ultra small 1911 sytle .45 in DAO, your only choice (and a great on, I might add) is the Para Ordnance C645. It is a single stack 6+1 in .45 with what Para calls their LDA double action. It is VERY smooth and light. I actually prefer the action now that I have shot it for a while.
To me this is the ultimate carry weapon. It will stop what you shoot (being a .45), it is reliable, looks and performs like a traditional 1911, and is double action. If you want it in a 7+1, they make a slightly larger version in the C745.
The Para Ord C645 is a little heavier than some carry weapons, but as a 3 inch barrel firing a .45, anything lighter would make it impossible to shoot. As it is, I can throw very tight double tap groups because it falls back on target so quickly and the recoil is absorbed so well.

I think that if I would get a small carry .45 (if we ever got concealed carry here), I'd skip the commercial offerings altogether and have someone cobble me a custom gun. My customized Colt 70 1911 is so far above what you can buy out of the box that I've been spoiled. Either that or pack a 357 mag wheelgun which would probably serve just as well in the long run.

I carry it all the time in a inside the waste band holster
I have left the rubber grips on it
and I am thinking of sending it back and putting
night sights on
also I have shot the little gun in IDPA

Everyone I know who owns a Kimber ( basically, everybody but me ) says they came out of the box shooting perfect groupings. I know a few law enforcement officers who carry them as back-up weapons, too. They're just a bit too expensive for me.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I'm going to go to a business in Roanoke that has an indoor range and a retail store and try some different models! I hope thy have the Kimbers and the Colt Defender. Maybe I can make up my mind then. They'll probably have Glocks too! Then I'll probably really be confused! GHD 0
