P-38-reblue or not
I have a P-38 which belonged to my father which was given to him by his father.Gun was in sorry condition,had to soak it in an oil bath for 1 month,good shooter now.I thought about rebluing gun(gun I think was originally black in color).It has pits and no color on barrel or anywwhere else for that matter.This gun will never be for sale.I want to hear pros and cons on doing this and where to get it done or is it passed being repaired,hopefully here is a picture.

I would reblue it,as a matter of fact I reblued my fathers P-38 last month.I reblued several of my fathers guns because several were damaged.I had all of them proffesionialy done except the P-38,I did it myself with Blue Wonder.CW

If I was keeping it as you say you are.I'd reblue it .That Blue Wonder I hear is great stuff.

Sorta depends on what and how - what do you want to do with it and how sentimental are you?
If you want it purely as a shooter - re-blue it; however, if it has a value being in the condition your father and grandfather left it to you, keep it as is. Clean and preverve it (to prevent further damage) but I would keep it as is.

If you are going to keep it, I see no reason why you shouldn't re-blue it. As a collector's piece, I'd have to say it probably isn't worth much; there are WWII P-38's out there in nicer shape for $400 on up. You may want to log on to www.p38forum.com, and ask Orv his opinion, and run the serial numbers and markings by him. He is the man on these things. 0 -

Personally, I think a p-38 is def. fun to shoot. however its like a classic car, do you really want to use it for excessive shooting. Also, i agree, if you DO want to use it as a shooter, reblue it, but personally, (note i havent seen it) i would keep it as is, for sentimental reasons. It has stories to tell with each mark.

Other than cleaning a firearm up, I have never considered having any firearm refinished. However, if you are intent on making it a shooter and refinishing it, why not consider having the gun finished in something more durable? 0
