Sights on target pistols
Just when I thought it was safe to go to the gun shop and just go shooting in their range, I came across a super clean S&W Model 41 nicely adorned with an Aimpoint sight and three magazines. I've wanted one of these guns for the longest time so...well you know...
Anyway, this is the second 22LR target pistol I've picked up lately with red dot sights. When I started shooting no one had these things;real men used iron sights and the really fortunate had a Bo-mar adjustable rear sight. Have bullseye shooters and other competitions now accepted these hi-tech gizmos. I'm assuming there are still purist matches with iron sights. Or have I been hibernating too long?

IDPA ( International Defensive Pistol Association ) is a shooting sport that ONLY allows iron sights on the pistols used in competition. It is based around the concept of Concealed Carry guns. Check it out at: www.idpa.com 0 -
I was aware of the IDPA(gets a lot of press), but I'm curious about the target/bullseye competions. I suspect that the Olympic level stuff hasn't gone hi-tech. Just want to know if anyone can tell me how the small caliber stuff goes now.

Back in the mid 70's when I was shooting competitively, I grafted a bushnell 1.3X onto my Ruger bull barrel and was the only one in the league not shooting iron sights. I haven't shot competitively for years but my guess is that you would see a lot of people taking advantage of electronic sighting equipment these days.

That's what it looks like. I heard that Camp Perry has lots of folks using them. It would be nice if scope mounts were set up to allow you to switch back and forth between regular and electronic/optical.
