    Dear RS:

    ".308 NATO" is a misnomer. 7.62x51 NATO and .308 Winchester are very similar but they are definitely NOT the same cartridge. Many dealers of surplus ammo like to blur the distinction, but particularly in older rifles not originally chambered for either round the differences can be critical.

    This subject has been discussed in detail in some fairly recent threads. I can't remember the titles, but if you search my name you should find the threads.

    Be careful. It is just not worth it, in my opinion, to risk a broken rifle, or injury, just to shoot cheap ammo.

    I do know the differenceon in terms (both 7.62x51 NATO and .308 Winchester work fine), but the question is, has any one used/bought this ammo. It is NATO spec. which the HK 91 has no ptoblem with. It is however tarnished and their are several different countries of origin, is there a preference? It runs $119-129 per Mil. Some is boxer ann the rest is Berdine. CIA has tested it. Are they reputable? Best, Robert

    Your thread refered to using the 308 in the 7.62x51 gun, What about using the nato round in a modern bolt action chambered for 308? Is this a problem as I have been doing so this week. The gunshop had it labeled as 308, but it is the 7.62x51.

    The military Nato 7.62(milimeter,mm)x 51(mm) ammo is generally loaded to a less powerful charge than the Civilian .308 (caliber) Winchester. Most modern rifles can use both safely, specially the bolt actions. The Hornby Light Mag .308W is not recomended for autos, for this reason. Best, Robert

    I bought 1000 rds of Belgian (FN) all NATO crossed for my M1A. It
    is dirty on the outside. I sorted it out by years. Fired 200
    rds in an afternoon---accurate and totally reliable (100%) in my
    homemade M1A! I believe the FN is sold out. I wish I had bought
    another 1000 rds--NOTHING wrong with this ammo!
