SCOPES, What to get / What not to get ??

I am looking in Sportsman's Guide, and CDNN, Gun List, Shotgun News, and others..... I can find, SIMMONS,TASCO,NcSTAR,BECING, And the list goes on! I know what GOOD scopes are, I have Springfields, and Leupold... At the last gun show, we were all talking about this..... What ones will work? Some say,if you use one brand of scope 1 time on a 308, it's gone. Some will say it works with 223's, but not 308's. Some would say, you shoot them 1 time on a .22 and it's trash... Lets hear for some of you that have the lower end scopes. Which ones are good, and what to stay away from.

    From what I've seen, shot and generally messed with, I am impressed with Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 and Simmons Aetec 3.8-12. Time will tell if they hold up but for now for intermediate priced scopes I'm impressed. The Buckmasters have had good repeatability and so have the Aetecs. Not bottom of the line scopes and not top of the line, just good scopes for the money! You will probably see a lot of Tascos offered at low prices due to their folding. Yes I've seen and owned them too. And the most failures I have seen have been Tascos. That's not to say these others won't fail but at least you have some recourse as to warranty. GHD

    Give the new Weaver Grandslams a try you will be surprised! Although not at the low end as far as price, They are simply amazing for the money!

    Spend the money and buy a good scope. Absolute waste of time risking a hunt or competition or even a plain nice day at the range on junk. If you are spending money to have a scope bore sighted and mounted you compound the problem.

    Look at the hairs- some are too big to shoot at anything small. A good scope will have hairs small sharp and crisp. Some "cheap" scopes are not that bad. The more recoil you have, the better scope you should get.
    A mag. rifle will screw up a cheap scope fast.

    For the under $100 range, there is absolutely no competition for the Bushnell trophy series. they have amber coated, high contrast lenses, and are crystal clear. They also survive recoil well.

    $100-$200, I will secong GHD's recommendation of the Aetec by Simmons. I was impressed with that one for the price, even better are the illumintaed reticle versions for a few more dollars. The weaver V series are nice as well for that price range.

    $300 range, B&L Elite series scopes are great

    $400-$500 BURRIS Signature series, will hang with leupolds that cost $150 more

    $600-$700 Burris Black diamond or leupold Long range

    $900-$1100 leupold MK IV or Zeiss or Swarovski

    $1200+ Schmidt and Bender, Swarovski, and topping my list would definitely have to be the Nightforce Extreme scopes, worth every penny!!!

    A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

    I do not care for Simmons based on a sample of 1 which is judging on too little evidence. Bushnell is a really decent scope for the money and have stood up to a 7 mag. Burris is my top choice, as I cannot afford $1200 scopes, or at least don't. Leupold did earn their rep, and they make a good product, but Burris is as good or better for less money. Nikon Monarch has done well for me, as has The grand slam. currently mounting a Pentax Lightseeker, but no data yet. For the most part you get what you pay for.

    LEUPOLD, LEUPOLD, LEUPOLD. I havefour, one on a 308, 0ne 0n a 308 norma mag, and one on a 338 mag, plus one on a 44 mag SRH. I put 200-300 full-bore rounds per week through the 44, no problems, ever, with any of them. That's why they can offer a lifetime warranty, even if you buy the scope used. It would be a tragedy to have the hunt of a lifetime ruined by an inferior scope.

    I very much agree with mballai on the scopes and also with Snowtigger. I have had the lower end scopes and seen a lot of them fail. So I just pay a little more then I have less worries.
