rossi m885 questions

i just got a lil rossi M885 in 38sp. 2 inch barrel, 6 shots. question is: why is the frame stamped m88 AND m885? the m885 is larger and appears to have been stamped after the m88. also, is there a place i can look up the serial number to see when is was made or imported?
