Walnut Grips On Colt SAA

Did Colt ever sell their 2nd gen. SAA with walnut grips? I aquired this gun from my Dad'd now deceased friend. He bought it in 1961 and used to shoot it with me and Dad back in the sixties. I can remember as a kid the gun was always had the walnut grips.

They look like they were factory fitted to the gun. They are smooth with no markings or logo. Could this have been an option in place the the black rubber grips? Thanks in advance.

  I'm drawing strictly on memory here......and not written reference material, but as best I can remember only some commerative and anniversary models came with factory walnut. I have a plain model with walnut grips, but I bought and installed them myself. Walnut stocks may have been a special order item just like a special length barrel. They were, and are, quite common on Italian replicas; and it is possible that your friend swapped a pair replica/original.

  Late 2nd generation SAA's came with black rubber stocks on the standard blue/CH model. Nickle plated, New Frontiers, and Buntlines came with smooth walnut stocks. Special order stocks included walnut, rosewood, laminated rosewood, ivorylite & pearlite.
