Winchester Mod. 70 22 Hornet
I have a Mod.70 in a 22 Hornet. Ser. # 178xxx. I know it was made in 1951. I was told it had been to Winchesters custom shop. The barrel about 1 inch from the reciever is like tapered 2 inches octagon down to reg. round barrel. On one of the flat octagon areas it has .V.G.W stamped. Does anyone know what this means? Does this increase the value? It is in very good condition. Bluebook Lists it at 1300.00 at 95%, is this accurate? I appreciate any imput. Thanks Alot

The Blue Book is OUT TO LUNCH ... That gun is worth no more than $300 if it has a Leupold 2.5x10x50 on it. I'd be willing to give you the $300 even without the scope cuz Im feeling generous today
Seriously ... don't know much about Winchesters but I would love to have one like you got, specially in Hornet ... The $1300 I believe is what a dealer might be inclined to have you believe it is worth. Go back and look at closed auctions, I think you'll find them going for up to $2K. They are highly sought after ...

That doesn't sound like a factory barrel - in which case the collector value (quite high) just fell to a high end shooter value (much lower).
I am NOT a Winchester expert, but I don't recall ever seeing a Winchester Mod 70 with the barrel configuration you describe.
