Russian Dragunov rifles and the Romak 3 use 7.62x54r. China made some that used 308 NATO, 7.62x51. The Romak 3 is not a true Dragunov, merely a cheap copy that uses the AK action, the Dragunov sniper used a different design. All dragunovs use a stamped receiver design, like the AK uses and was originally designed to use. Some AK's used the milled receiver due to production problems. The 7.62x54r round is one of the hottest rounds out there IMHO, If you always wanted one, the by all means get one, even if it is a Romak 3, Ammo is cheap now, and plentiful, so you can spend your time shooting, and not bent over picking up empty cases- Ralph

Nothing very, very good or very, very bad lasts for very, very long.

A good alternative for that rifle would be a Russian Mossin-Nagant rifle that uses a 7.62x54r round. Although not as much a collectors item, it has the same qualities. I found one at a gun show, still in the wrap, new condition, 99% for $200.00 and has the cleaning/service kit and bayonnet and sling with booklet. (*See NRA American Rifleman Feb. 2000).
I have seen the price on these going up and some are in "not to use" condition. The 7.62x54r with a 200 grain bullet will kick your shoulder back to next week, with no help from the steel buttplate.
Great shooter- best groups I get are 3.0" at 100 yds., with the iron sites.

The Romanian one is just fine if you want to have fun with it. Not as accurate as the Russian but then you can sure buy a lot of surplus ammo for the $1200 you save. I had a Romanian varient and played with it for a while...Used it at the Afghan Army shoots our club has. Shoots circles around the regular POS AK's....the scope on it is kind of cool as well. I found it very accurate with iron sights. You really need the leather cheek piece with the scope to start to achieve its full potential. And the final thing is that you know everyone will be checking it out when you bring it to the range. Beach
