1911 recoil spring help

How many pound spring do I want in a 5" steel 1911 gun? Load is 10mm, 200gr bullet at 1200 fps. Ohio changed their laws this year and I have a craving to hunt with a handgun...

  You should have one of the little blue horseshoe shaped Shok Buffs on your recoil spring guide. That, and an 18 1/2 lb. spring should be about right. After firing a box of your reloads determine if (1) the felt recoil is noticable more than factory hardball, and (2) if the Shok Buff is being deeply imprinted. If not, you're O.K.; if the conditions exist, move up to a 22 lb. spring. If your pistol continues to function reliably stay with the 22 lbs. spring. If not, drop back to a 20 lb. spring. Springs are cheap. Go with Wolff Brand and order from Brownells.

  Colt's factory spring for the Delta Elite was a 2 spring combo that was suppose to be equal to a 22 pound spring. That is as I recall, might have been 20 pound, but definitely 1 of the 2.

  I have the blue shock buffers already. The pistol is a p16-40 Para ord that I have been shooting ipsc with. Had a friend ream out a barrel for me. I tried my 16# spring Today and knew that it was too light.
  19 in the mag and 1 in the barrel should be adequate ammo to drop one of these little Ohio deer don't you think?????????? hehehehe

  Aren't you a l00fps high on your velocity estimate for the 200 grain bullet?
  The heaviest bullet for the 38-40WCF (40cal) for over 100 years was 180 grains. Velocity for the standard load out of a rifle was 1310fps. It was a successful short range deer cartridge but considered underpowered since WW2 and illegal for deer hunting in several states.
  I would suggest a 180 grain max load in 10mm to boost the energy level and more closely approximate 38-40 ballistics.

  I have used a 22 lb Wilson spring in my Colt 10mm. What I use now is an ISMI 22 flat spring that is made for 10mm Glock. I had a smaller diameter full length guide rod and plug made to fit the spring. It works better that a coil spring in my gun.
