CMP ammunition purchases (?)

Does anyone have an opinion (gawd... did I really say/type that ?)
about CMP ammunition purchases of commercial ammunition ? Good
news ? Bad news ? Or ? Prices seem right.

  Yeah--really; what an invitation! Well, I assume that you mean stuff like .22 L.R. made by Remington being sold by CMP. It might not be as fresh as what you would pick up at Wal-Mart, as it may have been purchased by the military several years ago and is now surplus to their need. But, if whatever it is that you are looking at has been stored properly, it should be as good as the day it was purchased by Uncle Sam. I'm currently looking at some of the Danish mfg. .30-06 ammo and have every expectation that it will work well.

  Der Gebirgsjager, actually, I was thinking of the Black Hills
  223. You have to buy 1000 rounds at a time but the cost per
  cartridge seems ok (and should be at that volume).

  Well, the ultimate decision is yours. I believe you'll find no difference between Black Hills ammo purchased through CMP, a commercial distributor, or (if eligible) directly from Black Hills. In this instance I believe price would be my deciding factor. Sometimes CMP seems to be a sole-source for some of the ammo they sell; and in that case, speaking as a reloader, if it doesn't work reliably I can re-hab it. In the case of Black Hills, they haven't been around long enough in the overall scheme of things to have their ammo deteriorate from old age, poor storage, etc.--so go with the price.
