Good Varmit Gun???
I'm heading to S. Dakota next year to kill a couple hundred prairie dogs with some good ole boys. I've never done any varmint hunting before and would like some advise on which gun to buy. I'm being told by some experienced guys to purchase the Remington 700 (heavy barrel) but others say get the Savage 112BVSS or 12BVSS. Moneys is always an issue but if it's only $100 difference then I want the better gun. Also what's better in the Savage - short or long action?

Either brand of rifle will do nicely, although I confess a preference for the Remington. The length of action will pretty much depend on what caliber you decide upon. For example, you won't get a .223 Rem. in a long action. The Sendero is a very good rifle. 0 -

Ditto on the Remington Sendero, I like the stainless fluted .223 or 22-250 depending on the distances your going to shoot ... if $$$ is a big factor, buy the Savage and add what you save to a good scope ...

How about a Ruger M77 .243?
I have used this in MI to take out hundreds of "woodchucks" in the last several years.
Remington 80g hollow points, 1.5 x 5 scope and some luck mixed with a lesser degree of skilland I have been sucessful.

I will champion the suggestions for the Remington 700 VS. If you have the extra, buy the VSSF. Very accurate rifles with one of the most workable and accurate out of the box actions made. Trigger is adjustable in 5 miuntes by way of 3 set screws, any gunsmith should be able to get it down to 2 or 3 lbs very easily. If you don't have the extra, I would go with the heavy barrel savage in stainless.

My preference is for the 700. The stainless fluted version is good but the plain old matte finish heavy barrel varmint will suffice! Whatever you choose, Remington or Savage, make it a 22-250!!!!!! As I've stated on here before, it's one of the 2 most amazing centerfires ever devised! If you want to go to the other one it's a 25-06!! In the eyes of the varmints, it's the "varmint rifle fom hell!" But it does get to be a little overkill and also hard on your shoulder if you're shooting 200 rounds per day! Still it's fun to smoke one way the hell out there!!!! GHD 0 -
Dont over look a heavy barrel winchester either...the win's are my preference cant really say why ....they just are, guess they are what i grew up with. nothing wrong with rem's either, cant say about the savage dont have any.
by the way where in SD are you going pdog hunting? i live in cent SD 45 or so miles east of Pierre.

Since this appears to be a "vote" type thing, VS (#1 because of
cost), VSS (if it's close to the VS in price) and a PSS (if the
price is close to either). Winchester 2232 45gr. ammo.

I was also thinking "Tikka", but in reference to the Ithaca Model LSA-55 Heavy Barrel in 22-250 that was made by the original "Tikka" from 1969-1977.
If you ever get a chance to acquire one of these, DO NOT miss the chance.
They were a top-notch Varmint gun 30 years ago and still are today.
This gun will group with anything ever made.0
