38 and 44 Merwin&Hulbert
Help I lost my Cartriges of the World book. Is the 38 S&W compatible with the 38 M&H? Is the 44 Russian compatible with the 44 M&H? Merwin & Hulbert ammo is almost impossible to find and it would be a shame to relegate mine to wall hanger status.

From the 9th Edition of COTW: No info on the 38 M&H.
On the 44 M&H.....doesn't look compatible with the 44 Russian.
Bullet Diameter: M&H-.424 Russian-.429
Neck Diameter: M&H-.442 Russian-.457
Rim Diameter: M&H-.502 Russian-.515
Case Length: M&H-1.15 Russian-.97
Ctg. Length: M&H-1.53 Russian-1.43
Except for cartridge length, looks like the Russian is just too big.

Thanks. I still can't find my COTW book. Probably won't find it til I buy a new replacement (lol). Seem to remember that there was a cartridge that interchanged but don't remember what or if it was for the 44 or 38.

The .44 M&H cartridge was basically an inside lubricated version of the .44 S&W American. Years ago I had one, and made some cases by cutting off .303 Savage rifle cases, which had same head diameter. Most M&H 44s are of course .44-40, aka ".44 Winchester 1873" and the 1887 M&H catalog lists the .44 M&H caliber option as "for the Mexican trade." The .38 M&H I believe was just their version of the .38 S&W. 0 -
I have a .44 M&H open top, square grip, scalloped cylinder in nice condition. Tried the .44 straight case types, .44 Russ, Spl and Mag all too big to go into cylinder. No other cartridges I have on hand come near fitting, except some un-ID .44 rimfires that fit well or a bit loose. 0 -
It sounds like your unidentified 44 rimfires could be .44 Henry's 0
