SKS purchase question

Hello recently I became interested in SKS. I want to get one and was wondering which are good and which ones should I stay away from. Also I saw couple or milled ones on GB. Are they any better and worth the extra $$. How accurate is SKS anyway.
Also I would want to convert it to accept AK mags. Is it worth the trouble to convert it and do I have to permanently alter the firearm

    Best SKS - Russian. The Yugo ones arround are decent for the money... accuracy-not an inherent trait of the SKS. I Have tried Every handload I could cook up as well as 10-15 different factory and surplus loads. If you get a 6 inch group at 100yds you are doing really good.

    Just one guy's opinion:

    If you want an SKS that accepts AK mags, buy an SKS that was factory built to accept AK mags or buy a Romanian AK-47. (I think the the Norinco SKS-D or Sporter is built to accept AK mags -- but I also believe the Sporter will not have any provision for a bayonet, could be wrong). There are many, many reports of the SKS conversions really sucking -- poor feeding, jams, etc. Successful conversions seem to require lots of extra work beyond slapping the kit in. I wouldn't buy one already converted unless I could test fire it first.

    SKS's are made to accept stripper clips. Stripper clips are a very fast way to reload a weapon. They are much faster than clearing a jam. Some folks argue they are faster than changing mags. If you can't find a factory sks made to accept AK mags and absolutely cannot limit yourself to just 10 rounds (and stripper clips), get a Chinese sks and put in a fixed 20 round mag (and it will still accept stripper clips just like the fixed 10!). I have heard some folks have problems installing the fixed 20 on a Russian SKS, but my Russian works fine with it. Your mileage may vary -- thats why I say install it on a Chinese. You'll save a few dollars, too.

    I have several SKS's, and they are all fine firearms. I prefer both of my Russians because they feel better. As for resale value, Russian will be better. I like my paratrooper, too, just because it is fun -- esp. with the fixed 20 round mag. Note that the "Paratrooper" was just a marketing idea and it was not a military weapon.

    While the SKS is not noted for accuracy, you ought to be able to maintain a group better than 6"@100 yards. I have quite a few nationalities in my safe. I can't tell a lot of difference between them in accuracy. They average around 4"@100yds, and that is with surplus ammo. There have been many reports of Yugo's coming in with sewerpipes for bores, so you might want to inspect a yugo first hand before purchase.

    IMHO, the SKS is a fine firearm, in its original config. If you want an SKS, get an SKS and deal with stripper clips -- if you want something like an AK, get an AK. A Romanian AK isn't much more than a Russian SKS. Best of luck!

    I agree and have had similiar experience as SUNDOWNER,except I have never used the chinese 20rd fixed mag.Every AK mag conversion I have seen has had trouble but I have never done one myself.CW

    If Simonov wanted SKS's to have detachable magazines, he would have designed them with them. If you're looking for detachable mags I'd go with an AK. I swear my friends and I have tried every possible scheme out there. They are all junk. I have a chinese SKS paratrooper that shoots great. Better than most AK's. Sks's are good for plinking as far as battle rifles go, they lack that detachable magazine feature. To load with strippers you have to take the thing off your shoulder and use 2 hands, not very tactical.
