Hunting ammo for .357 mag

First off, hello all.

Now then, to the question: I've got a 4" GP-100 that I'm planning on taking after whitetails this fall. I'm wondering what would be the best factory load to use (I don't handload...yet). I've shot everything from 125gr Golden Sabres to 158gr SJHP to 180gr SJHP, and all seem to perform about the same at 50 yards...any suggestions?

    try the Hornady XTP hp, in the 158gr.

    Winchester makes a "Partition Gold" 180 gr. JHP, specifically for hunting. It has a heavier jacket and is designed for better penetration before expanding. There are a number of good loads out there that are meant for stopping people, they too would be an acceptable choice, but with deer you need to penetrate deeper to get the vital organs.

    I am sure you checked but here in wisconsin a handgun needs a 5 1/2 " barrel.I would also get as close to grain weight as you target shoot with 158-180 but I like the speed of the 125.If I had to pick I would buy the winchester partition gold in 158-180 makes anice hole

    nelchris : remember the 5 1/2 inches is measured from the end of the barrel to the firing pin , so even a 4 inch barreled gp-100 would be legal here in WI,, heck even my 3 5/8 inch Ruger sheriffs in 45 colt is legal

    Yes you are right about "to the firing pin" measurment I just didnt know a 4"would qualify .That opens up alot of more options than my 6" revolver

    Thanks for all of the responses; I'll pick up some of the 180gr Partitions next time I'm in town (but...whew! They're about $20 a box out here!).

    Oh--and to clarify--in MN, a deer legal weapon (rifle or handgun) must fire a round at least .23 caliber and have a minimum case length of 1.25" (with a few exceptions... .50AE & 10mm are in, .30 carbine is out). There are no restrictions as far as barrel lengths are concerned.
