7.62 x 39mm for Florida Whitetail?
I just recently bought a Ruger Mini 30 and was wondering if it would be wise to take it in the woods on a deer hunt. I have a .270, but I like shooting that mini 30. Does it have enough ass on it to do the job? How far out do I need to limit it? Thank you for your advice.

I say stick with the 270 just to be sure. The mini-30 is a good gun but I really don't think it has the cajones to really lay 'em out. Where in FL are you? With that 2Lt I'm reckonin' Milton or P'cola.

The 7.62x39 is sufficient for deer size game but the distance thing comes into play (as much as I hate to admit it because I love Ruger), the Mini-14/30 isn't anywhere near as accurate as a bolt action out past 150 yards. If you're hunting in brush or close distance try out that wonderful Ruger but if you're out in the open will270win's advice and use the .270. 0 -
With good bullets the 39 is about the equivilant of the 30-30,in terms of where to use it. ie: short distance-brushy areas. 0 -
Thanks for the advice. I'm in the guard and my unit is in Tallahassee,Fl. 3/124th INF. 270WIN are you in the military? I planned on using it for short distances but just in case i'll probably stick to the .270

I am a Marine SSgt out here in 29 Palms, CA. I come from Pace, FL originally. It's right over there by Pensacola. I'll be home a few days after Christmas so if you want to hunt hit me up on the e-mail sometime, it's only a few hours drive.
