Tough choice...I love my Glock 21's and my 1911's...

I also have large hands and the 1911A1 does not fill my hands with standard grips. I have tried different Pachmayr and Hogue grips and have finally settled on the Finger Groove Hogues. They fill my hand and are comfortable to shoot with. I have them on both my full size and compact 1911A1's..

    Good luck with your choice....

I LIKE THE COLT, BUT IN ALL FAIRNESS, I WOULD SAY GO FOR THE ONE THAT FEELS GOOD, YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY SHOOT BETTER.. IN THE TIME UNTILL YOU GET THE MONEY, SEE IF YOU CAN FIND A 1911 TO SHOOT.. YES THE HOGUE PALM SWELL TYPE GRIPS WILL HELP.

To me a gun's grip is extremely important. I use Hogue finger groove rubber grips and an Ed Brown Wedge magazine spring housing on my 1911. This provides a very handfilling feel for me and doesn't require big bucks.

I think you can do well for about $600 on a 1911. Chances are you'll eventually spend a bit more to get the 1911 just the way you want it. Depends on your tastes. You might want to look at some other Springfields or Kimbers to see how they work for you. The more you can get right on your pistol "out of the box" will save you money in the long term.

If I were buying a 1911A1 I would buy the Springfield Loaded Model. It comes with alot of coupons as well,I bought the 8 Rnd mags for mine.If I had to choose between the 1911A1 or the Glock 21,I would buy the Glock.

    Best!!!

In a .45, take a look at at Para-Ordnance double-stack. Para double-stack pistols have a fairly large grip that should feel great in a large hand. Also take a look at the H-K USP .45. I like the EAA Witness as well. Another great .45 is the CZ97. I personally do not like the Glock grip angle, and the lack of manual safety.

you might try the para-ordanace p-14-45. they are a double stack .45 most 1911 parts intechange so it can be customized easily. they fit big hands. 14 rd high cap mags are available for arround $40 and are flush fit(alot more fun than the standard 7 you get with a single stack gun). if you shop arround you will be in the 550- 600 range.

I OWN A CHARLES DALY 1911 AND LOVE IT. THE GRIPS CAN BE CHANGED TO ANY STYLE JUST LIKE THE SPRINGFIELDS. THE ONE I OWN IS THE FIELD ENHANCED MODLE 5IN BARREL. IT ALSO COMES IN STAINLESS IF YOU PERFER. I HAD MINE TUNNELED AND POLISHED, AND ADDED A FULL LENGTH GUIDE ROD.
THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS IS I BOUGHT MINE FOR AROUND 45O.OO. IF YOU CHOOSE A 1911 ITS BECAUSE YOU PLAN TO CUSTOMIZE IT TO YOUR NEEDS AND LIKES. THE CHARLES DALY IS VERY ACCURATE RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX ADD ON THE CUSTOMS AND YOU HAVE A WEAPON THAT IN MY OPION SHOOTS AS WELL AS THE SPRINGFIELD FOR A LOT LESS.
    GOOD LUCK

Springfield also offers a 1911 "widebody" (10 shot) model that you might like. Saw one at the gunshow today for $629.00.

I made a "horrifying" discovery recently. I have owned a series 70 colt steel frame combat commander for over 20 years. I tweaked it a little (MMC combat sights and a detonics recoil spring guide) but for the most part just shot and carried this as my primary piece. In the last couple of years, I acquired a para p-14 stainless, and an HK USP 45, and had not touched the commander for about a years. The horrifying discovery, is that all of a sudden I don't even like the feel of the commander in my hand. That is a statement I thought I would never make. Oh well time marches on, and my son will be thrilled with this development. He has been after it for years. Now he just has to wait until he gets out of Kalifornia before I let him have it.
Try out a few, and see what you like. I have found the double stack guns much more favorable, and in fact just recently bought my 1st Glock (Model 20, 10mm) but that is another story.
    Good luck.

I would go with the Glock 21. But let me try to support my bias. Most Glocks I have seen come out of their tupperware shooting incredibly well. On top of this, they are incredibly reliable. Most 1911-style pistols I have seen do not come this way- meaning you have to spend a TON more money just to get them to where ( in my opinion ) they should be.
Well...some 1911's come in good shape. But they also cost around $1200.

I might as well chime in here too Since I have 1911's, Glock 21 and 30 as well as the HK Tactical and Match .45's, this is my view.

Although I love the 1911 style pistols, and have both wide bodies as well as single stack's, compact and full size, and I shoot my 1911's much more than the HK's or Glock's, (even though I've bought a different barrel for the Glocks to shoot my lead reloads). If I could have only 1, I would go with the HK USP. For reliability, accuracy, trigger and over all shooting comfort, the HK can't be beat. Ten round mags are easy to find, and 13 rounders are also out there if you want them, but like all hi-caps they aren't cheap and you can buy 2-3 ten rounders for the price of 1 hi-cap.

As to your question about grips; YES! There are wider grips. My problem isn't so much that my hands are big, but my fingers are long ... I don't like the Hogue grips, but I picked up some wood wrap around grips that make the 1911 single stack much easier to grip and more comfortable to shoot.
