Mosin Nagant stiff bolt

After a round has been fired in my Mosin, the bolt is sort of hard to turn up. It's no problem it is in the cocked position. My brother-in-law has two and neither of his are this stiff. Is there something I can do to make them looser?

  I have this trouble with 1 of mine. If you use brass cased ammo and not STeel it usually solves the problem. In one case I resorted to lubing the cases with a little film of grease, which also worked, though for some reason I am told that this is dangerous even though many early autos require oiled rounds.

  I've used both, but it also does it when no rounds are loaded.

  Remove any burrs from the cocking cam and striker extension surfaces. Than with some fine abrasive, lap them in to each other. Clean, lube and try.

  Ditto to the Tailgunner's advice. Many of these were re-matched to other than their original rifles following the war, and need a little TLC to work better. Even at their best they're usually a little stiff. It's not in their design to be a Mauser or a Krag.

  Oiled cartridges were used in some early full auto weapons. They were dropped for two reasons: 1. They caused the weapon accumulate a lot of dirt causing stoppages. 2. they caused an increased amount of thrust on the bolt.

  You could try a different bolt head. As to the oiled rounds, to expand on what Iroqois says, when the gun is fired the case expands for a millisecond and grips the sides of the chamber. This limits the amount of pressure exerted on the bolt. You could solve a small problem and create a big problem by oiling the cartridges.
