Dented Primers = Excessive Headspace??
Bought a sporterized Mauser 96 6.5 X 55, with stepped military barrel. Unused condition since being customized. Gun looks pretty good but doesn't want to actually pop primers and shoot bullets.
Just leaves a little dent in the primers on the Norma and Sellier & Belliot ammo I tried, while it would fire Remingtons (at least the few I tried).
Since it has a military barrel, does this mean that the guy who customized it forgot to check the chamber, before he worked the barrel over and if he would have checked the barrel would have found that the headspace was excessive?
What are the other likely causes of dented/unfired primers?

First check the bolt face for approximately 1/16" protrusion of the firing pin. Also check if you get a solid clunk when you dry fire it.
If you don't get it, take the bolt apart and clean out the cosmoline.

Make sure the bolt handle is not contacting the stock,keeping it from going completely into battery position.It doesn't take much contact to cause a M98 to do exactly what you described.Let me Know how it turns out.Roger heckmanj@ptsi.net 0 -
