Skydive, generally shells are used in shotguns and cartridges are used in handguns and rifles. A bullet is the actual projectile. A round is a term which describes a loaded cartridge which is ready to chamber into a weapon and fire. Don't let anybody put you off your course of learning about firearms and don't take anything said here personally. I'm critisized by some for being either too technical or by others for being too general...usually in the same post! I suggest that you go out and buy a few general shooting/hunting books so that you can study in peace and then when you are stumped bring your question to the forum.

some good basic info:
Outdoor Life Gun Data Book by F. Phillip Rice
The Firearms Dictionary by R. A. Steindler
Firearms Encyclopedia by George C. Nonte, Jr.
Encyclopedia of Firearms by Harold L. Peterson
The Complete Shooter (sb) by Sam Fadala
There is similar confusion regarding the terms clip, magazine, etc. I always notice how the terms are used, as it is a measure of credibility. I may not know whereof I speak, but if I use the correct terminology, it seems as if I do!

Shell can also be used to describe an empty rifle or hand gun cartridge. Some will some won't. As long as we can understand what you are writing about that will work. Some folks take their potty training a little to seriously. That is their problem not yours. Glad to see you hanging in Skydive, it is a good board!
