Last time I ran across something like that online fairly recently, I had started at CMP's website and somehow got there. www.odcmp.com

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

The sound of a 12 gauge pump clears a house fatser than Rosie O eats a Big Mac !

THE 5 IS THE ANOUNT OF THROAT EROSION, 1= NEW BARREL 10=WATER PIPE THE #5 WOULD PROBABLY SHOOT OK BUT YOU WOULN'T WIN ANY MATCHES WITH IT.

There are 2 ways to measure barrel wear on an M1, and there are gauges to measure both.

You are referring to throat erosion, or TE. This is wear at the point where the bullet enters the barrel, and is caused by shooting. New barrels have a TE from 1-2. The US military replaced barrel when they reached 5, although they are often accurate up to 10. Armorers don't think that the TE is that important.

Muzzle wear, or MW, occurs at the muzzle end of the barrel. It usually is caused by cleaning without a bore guide, common in the military. A new barrel measures 0-2; beyond 4 or 5, accuracy tapers off severely. Without a gauge, you can make a rough estimate by inserting an M2 round point first in the muzzle; if at least 1/8" of copper jacket still shows, it is a tight muzzle & should shoot well. If none of the copper shows, the barrel needs to be replaced.

The website lee directed you to is that of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which should be the first place you look. If you want to buy from a dealer, consider the service grade rifles sold by Scott Duff or Orion 7. If you buy elsewhere, you will likely get taken unless you know what you are looking at.

It's a tapered calibrated plug gage called a Breech Bore Gage.
As the throat wears, the gage will go further into the barrel.
If I remember correctly, when it reaches 5 the rifle is classified unserviceable and gets rebarreled. That saying the gun
is not up to military standards but may perform ok at short range.
