A shotgun for the wife
The wife claims she wants to start shooting skeet [the good news]. I've never done that, so I'm not sure what to look for in a shotgun [the bad news]. She's fairly small, so I was thinking 20 ga instead of 12. Will the reduced shell size would make it significantly harder to hit the target? Other questions: 1) junior or women's verses standard size models; 2) pump, over-under or semi-auto? 3) any particular manufacturer? 4) what barrel length should I be looking at? Thanks in advance for your help!

You might want to check with your local shooting club and see if they have a class for beginers. Sometimes they will also have a variety of guns to shoot to see what fits and is comfortable. If not some of the members may be willing to let her try their guns. 0 -
Oski-I've got one of those nice little Browning 20 ga side-by-sides that I picked up back when my bride thought she wanted to shoot several years ago. I would keep such "changes of heart" in mind while I shopped. I've also got some pretty nice fishing gear that I similarly acquired. She's a doll and showed really good taste in her equipment but the out-door sports fire waned shortly after she completed the three-day La Wildlife & Fisheries Ladies program. Best, Jim

20 gauge with a skeet choke should work. You could alway put in a cylinder choke if needed. Consider using target loads which may reduce recoil, though it depends upon the shot cups used, some recoil harder.

20 ga is a good choice. I would also suggest an O/U with a single trigger.

The 20 GA is an excellent choice but I feel the 28 GA is also a good starter gun.

haha! i must say i like tha tone members responce "shotgun for the wife"
but yeah, i would personally say a 20 ga. may be a bit small. The best thing would be to go to a club and have her try different sizes. 12ga. would prob be to much... i think. though i personaly dont find much kick in a 2 3/4 shell. But a 16 ga. i think would do fine aswell.

Yup, go with the 20 GA. It will do the job just fine. I've used a 20 GASXS for years for everything. (Concerning the 28 GA ... I've seen some nice ones, but have you seen the price os 28 GA ammo lately? Maybe she is not yet ready to reload!)

Recoil from a 12 to 20 is slightly less. Recoil from 12 to 28 (yes ammo is expensive) is significantly less. If choosing a 20 pick a semi auto as it will reduce recoil even more. Recoil will turn away more starting shooters than anything else. Another thing is a shooting vest with padding in the shooting shoulder.

Invest in some instruction from a professional to see if she likes skeet and has a knack for it. Let her shoot different guns to find what she prefers. 0
