300 ultra mag vs 7mm ultra mag
hi guys i already have a 30-06 and am concidering a 300 or 7mm ultra mag for an out west or canada hunt.please suggest other cals. if you think im missing something. here in pa a 30-06 is enough for any deer or black bear,i am looking at moose, elk, grizzly, ect so do you think that a new gun is needed for a for a hunt that will only be done once every 3 to 5 years or so thanks for your replys :john

At the cost of ammo right now, I might go with a 300win mag or 300 wthby mag. The Ultra mags are still a little pricey at $30/box. My friend has a Sendero in 300um and it shoots very well. We got 1 hole at 150yds with the core-lokt ammo. Now, recoil is stout on a sporter barrel, but in the Sendero is very pleasant. Other than that, it's just preference. The 300um will be around for a while IMHO as it is one of the new breed of non-belted big boys. For grizzly's, I would want the 30 cal not the 7mm, even though I am a devoted fan of the .284 bullet.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.0 -
I think that your 06 is enough too handle elk or moose....I use my 7mm mag for moose... no need for an Ultra mag......Maybe only for grizzly
lets all be responsible! shoot a criminal! Remember 0% of firearms pull there own trigger!0 -
Your .30-06 will drop a moose or an elk like a ton of bricks with a properly placed shot. Just like a deer in PA. With good quality(Nosler partitions or something similar) heavy bullets, it'll deal with a griz too. Maybe not a Kodiak bear with one shot, but everything else in North America.
Now, if you're looking for a reason to buy a new rifle (it's not an excuse. it's a reason), Ultra mag ammo is horrendously expensive. So is the new Winchester Short Magnum ammo. Up here, in Canada, the dies for the WSM's are worth $100Cdn.0 -

I have a Glock 23(.40) It's light, reliable, and a lot of fun to shoot. I recently bought a Kel-Tec P-40 for carry. It is small light and so far reliable(100 rds, going shooting again tomorrow)Go to KTOG.org for more info. Some people love them some hate them. I think it is worth the money and if you want something for carry check it out! 0
