reloading question?

I read in an older reloading manual that you can substitute Comet for the polishing additive for media. Is that true and can someone tell me how much to use and how long to run the tumbler?

I suspect it might work in very small quantities perhaps a 1/2 tsp or less. Remember you want to polish not scrub.

Best way to test this is on an old batch of media with some random brass picked up at the range.

gary, welcome! That sure sounds like an interesting possibility & I wouldn't be surprised if it works. The only thing that would concern me is that it might leave a chemical residue on the brass which might affect the organics (primer compound, powder) in loads - over time, if not in the short term. Probably very remote possibility, but I've seen stranger things.

I've never used Comet with cleaning media but DID have very nice results a week or so ago adding about a teaspoon of Simichrome metal polish to a tumbler full of new walnut media. If there's any ammonia in that pink goo I'd trust it would evaporate quick enough not to be harming the brass I added awhile later. Comet does have a fine abrasive in it, as do many general purpose cleaners; I'd be somewhat reluctant to use these in a final cleaning step prior to reloading. Cleaners for porcelain & other ceramics may be too harsh to use on metal which is considerably softer generally.

I don't know about the use of Comet, but I have heard of stranger stuff than that. I would recommend using Flitz polish in corn cob media. It makes my brass shine so bright you can almost see yourself in it. Just my $.02 worth.
