If you want the best, there's only Kimber.
Check their website, www.kimberamerica.com. Prices vary depending upon model. They don't have prices on their website, but I don't think they have much under $500.

assuming you want new current production rifles and price is not important. if you are price concious try:
1. anshutz model 1451 target rifle starting at $347.00 without sights.(about $600.00 with sights)
2. marlin model 2000l target rifle starting at $650.00
3. savage model 900tr target rifle starting at $440.00
these are all match grade compatition target rifles. hunting, plinking, and everday guns are a different story.

I'd have to say Ansh?tz as well. =o)
I've got a 1451 Classic repeater with thread for silencer.
It works grrrreat and is really accurate both for hunting and targetting.
There is also the 1416 Classic with heavy barrel or the 64 with stainless barrel.
But anything names Ansh?tz will do.
The trigger on Ansh?tz can be adjusted and there's a variety of magazines available: 2-shot, 5-shot, 10-shot and single-loader-adapter if you want to load one shot at a time. (or for when sonny-boy learns to shoot...!!)
If you'd want a scope on the rifle, be sure to put on steel scope-rings.!! They're a little bit more expencive than regular rings, but they're so much better.

Just owns a silenced .22LR Anshutz rifle =o) .308Win Steyr Mannlicher - Scout ;o_ That's all I need, but not all I want.
Don't do anything I've allready done - It's just plain stoooopid. =o)0 -
I'm a big fan of the guns from the sixties, give me a Remington built in the 60's, and I'm a happy hunter with a good shooter.

One of the Savage/Anshutz model 164 should fill you bill quite well.

MrMike - As to the Anschutz, aside from the heavy-barreled sure-enough accurate target rifles, how about the bolt action repeaters like the .22 long rifle Mod 164, Mod 153, Mod 141, and Mod 54? Before I get googly-eyed over one of them, do you think these rifles are significantly more accurate than a similarly configured Ruger 77/22 or Remington Mod 581. I'd like to have a really accurate squirrel rifle...do you have a feel for the price range on those Anschutz repeaters? I have perused the lots at gunbroker as well as auctionarms and see only a few of the benchrest-type single-shots. Thanks. Jim

HappyNanoq - I didn't mean to leave you off this inquiry...I tried to edit it to include all the Anschutz-familiar folks and only succeeded in sending the same posting twice. Also, apologies to all for the poor choice of words in the first posting. Thanks, Jim

"in your opinion what is the best bolt action 22"....
Well fella's, a lot of nice rifles mentioned....but you all have it wrong..."There are .22's, and then there are 52's". Winchester's model 52 is the greatest .22 bolt action ever designed, the one by which all others are compared. For over 80 years this has been the epitomy of design perfection. It has won more competitions than you imagine. This rifle was then discontinued in the 70's and re-introduced about 10 years ago under the Browning and Winchester names. Price's range from $500+ for a newer version, upwards to $3000+ for an original sporter. Here is one that's available on auction...

entry level lower priced bolt action rifles for moderate target shooting, plinking, and small game hunting.
1. charles daley superior bolt action rifle ($189.00)
2. dan wesson coyote classic bolt action rifle ($219.00)
3. marlin model 880 heavy barrel bolt action rifle ($230.00)
4. savage mark II-LV heavy barrel bolt action rifle ($222.00)
these are the best of the under $250.00 guns. the anshutz, kimber, ruger, and others price themselves out. they are superior guns, but i am trying to keep the cost low.

Chris, how much money do you want to spend. I like Anschutz myself, they are a bit price. Kimber, Winchester 52, Remington 40xr 541 and Ruger 77/22 also great guns. However this is a big price range. If you want to spend around $200.00 look at marlin and savage. If the price range is $350.00 and up look at some of the others I mentioned. 0
