Ruger has always priced their guns attractively. Ruger seems to be able to produce good guns that are well designed and made without putting big holes in your wallet. Let the other gun companies worry about how they do it. If you are going to start with a .22, Ruger's MkII Target pistols are superb.

What calibre or type of hand gun do you want? In any case, it's how well it fits your hand that matters. My hands are short but wide. The Ruger GP-100 and SuperRedHawk fit but their P-85 9mm pistol doesn't. Try as many as you can before you buy one. Grasp the firearm like you're shaking hands then close your eyes and raise your arm to shooting position. Open your eyes. If it fits properly, the sights will be in line with your eye.
Generally, Ruger handguns are extremely strong and well made. However, if a handgun doesn't fit your hand, it makes no difference who made it. You'll never be able to shoot it well.

I have always liked Ruger revolvers, strong firearms and good looking.Just as good as my SW,Taurus,or Colts. However their autos always looked chunky and to multicolored for my taste. This changed when I got a Ruger 95DC with a polymer frame.Good looking, functions great and just as good as my Glocks,at less than half the price.Best priced guns on the market.CW

You can never go wrong with a Ruger. One word: reliable.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

Though they are reliable and priced cheaply, they do lack things that u get in higher cost guns, such as accuracy, weight, size, ergonomics, fit/finish, etc.

Kinda like the new High Points, I haven't seen one malfunction yet, they are reliable as heck, and about the cheapest on the market. I'd still rather have something just a little more expensive....

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I've owned and still own several Rugers - all in all, I found them to be fine products. Never had problems with any of them. And as far as I'm concerned, they are as accurate as any other make no matter what the price.
I think in simply boils down to a matter of a shooter's taste - not quality, accuracy or price. Ruger ranks with the best in my book.

I really don't think we can put Ruger in the same class as a hi-point. Although like you said leeblackman hi-point is a very reliable gun.

Never had a problem with accuracy shooting any of my Rugers. A lot of my buddies who shoot S&W's, Glocks and other more expensive guns can't hit the broad side of a barn with a Ruger and damn the gun for it. A Ruger is a Ruger, it is not something else, and if you practice a little one would see that they are accurate guns. When your buddies are clearing malfunctions, your Ruger will keep on barking no matter what you feed it. PS: you can feed your Ruger anything but oatmeal and it will function . "My good old reliable brick............when the ammo runs out Old Bill makes a good club.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

Bill Ruger is primarely the answer to your question. He wanted to build high quality guns at prices the average working man could afford. And he was very careful to make sure all the flaws were qorked out of a weapon before releasing it on the Market.IMHO Ruger Builds the strongest revolver on the market, using a totally different way to lock the cylinders on the Gp100s,SP101s and of course the super Redhawk. If well taken care of and proper maintenance a Ruger should last the average person a life time. With his rescent passing away,I hope the company continue's to run the same way.

    Best!!!
