Extended Tubular magazine on Model 12 WIN
Hello, I have a 1922 Model 12 20 gauge in full choke. The magazine from the top end to where you introduce the shells measures 16 and 1/4 inches. The distance between the Pump Grip to the end of the magazine is 4.25 inches. (to the end of the barrel) There is a plug in it, so rather than taking it out, I placed as many 2 3/4 " shells as I could alongside the magazine, and It "appears" I could fit 7 shells in the magazine. If not 7 I KNOW I could fit 6. Is this normal on 20 gauges of that era? or an option? just wondering. Thanks again > I assume on normal magazines 5 would be the limit. Any thoughts, and is this gun worth more because of the magazine... P.S. I did check, and the magazine is locked in place, and the arrows are aligned.

All model 12 magazines are designed to hold 5 cartridges. 0 -
I pulled an old 20 ga. M12 out of my safe, took it apart and got the same measurements you did from yours. Your gun has a standard magazine, it'll hold 5 shells unless it's got the wooden plug in it for duck hunters (then it'll hold two).
It's been many years since I got that 20 ga. M12 out, they sure do handle nice. Maybe I'll go grouse hunting tomorrow...0 -
Hey there, Weird, my 12 gauge magnum 870 tube is only 11 3/4 inches, and of course holds the standard 5 shells. Why did they make the m12's tube 5 inches longer??? I haven't pulled my plug out , I'll have to. It looks to hold 6+. Does your magazine extend 4 plus inches in front of the end of the pump grip??? I've picked up model 12's where the tube barely extends beyond the pump ....... I'll pull the plug...... 0 -
Yes, the magazine on mine extends 4 inches and maybe an 1/8 more past the pump grip. I'm not sure what plug you're talking about taking out. I've got 12 ga, 20 ga and 28 ga M12's here (I used to collect them) and they're all the same. The Mod 25 and Featherweight Twelve both had forends like you describe "where the tube barely extends beyond the pump" - but I assure you the M12 always had about 4 inches. Both these guns looked similar to M12's, but were not. They used three basic slide handles; these can give a slightly different look to the gun too. 0 -
I don't know about the 20 gauge but my 16 holds 6 in the tube plus 1 in the chamber for 7 total and my dad who's 82 says he thought for sure the 20 held 1 more than the 16, jerk that plug out of it and see what she will hold and let us know!!

My 12 holds 7 total and my 20 holds 6 total. The 12 ga. is a standard model 12 army marked riot. The 20 is a standard 1963 model.

I'm totally shocked. I Finally took her apart and pulled the plug. I then proceeded to fit 6 shells in the tube.....and I could only fit 5 plus one in the chamber. So,,,,why in the heck did Winchester make a tube over 16" long to only fit 5 shells??? it looks goofy I think. and how is it that my 870 tube is just over 11 inches and fits 5 shells???? I'll bet you could get 6 in their if you messed around and changed the spring or something...... O.K. I'm humbled. LOL!!!!!!! I guess I learned something anywho. I thought I had some sort of "special model 20 gauge" LOL........ But wait... If they were intended to hold only 2 1/2 inch shells like someone informed me (from the factory), you could fit 6. 0 -
One reason it has extra length to the mag tube is to give space for the spring.
